By 1812, Napoleon had created a French empire that covered almost the whole of Europe. However, after a disastrous campaign in Russia Napoleon's empire began to crumble. In April 1814, Napoleon was forced to abdicated. He went into exile in Elba, an island off the coast of Italy, only to return with fresh troops the following year to make another bid for power. The combined armies of Britain, Austria, Prussia and Rissia defeated Napoleon's army at the battle ofWaterloo in 1815. It was to be Napoleon's last battle. The French had more soldiers and better artillery but they were still soundly beaten. He was sent into exile on the island of St Helena, where he died in 1821.
