Viking towns such as Kaupang in Norway and Hedeby in Denmark flourished on deals in furs, reindeer antlers and walrus ivory. These materials were exchanged for weapons, jewels and pottery. Viking home life was based on farming and fishing. Several generations (including uncles and cousins) often shared one single-roomed house made of wood, stone or turf with a roof thatched with straw. A good sword was highly valued and would be passed down from father to son.
