New Zealand and England fought equally well on the first day of the match. As the Kiwi bowlers could not take more than 4 wickets, the English batsmen could not make more than 241 runs. As a result, the first day of the test was in parity.

On the second day, however, the tourists were clearly ahead. After being all out for 353 in their innings, England took 4 wickets for 144 at the end of the day. The hosts are still behind at 209.

England could not add more than 122 for the remaining 6 wickets today (Friday), playing 241 for 4 in the previous day. Ben Stokes was dismissed for 91 as he scored a century. Jose Butler also scored 83 runs.

New Zealand's Trent Boult 1, Colin de Grandhomme 3, Neil Wagner 3 and Tim Southee took 4 wickets.

New Zealand scored 144 runs after losing 4 wickets before the day ended. Fifty-four captain Ken Williamson (51) has returned. In addition, Ross Taylor scored 25 and opener Jeet Rawal scored 19 runs.
