3 Ways Your Choice of Photos Make Your Blog Look Bad

in #blogging6 years ago (edited)

After spending precious hours refining that travel post, you may find yourself in a state of frustration and disappointment when it receives no love in this platform.

Well you’re not exactly the only one having issues with visibility and travel blogs are a competitive tag to begin with.

Photos are an indispensable asset to your travel blog. It’s impossible to talk about travel online without them. Your choice of photos in your travel blog is a strong indicator for your audience to pursue reading or search for the next eye candy post on sight.

Your text may be high grade material but if the photos you put it can’t anchor a reader’s attention, it’s all down the drain.

The point is, people reading online have shorter attention spans.

More selfies and less scenery

Look, we understand that selfies are part of the process in making good memories from the place but it’s best to keep that self love to yourself or at a minimum in your post. You need to consider that people looking at your blog are not really familiar with who you are yet.

Think of every travel post you make as an entry level to your other travel blogs.

Assume that with every post you make, people are less interested to know more about you and prefer to learn more about the place you are talking about.

It’s a deterrent for them to focus on visualizing the place when most of the photos you took have you blocking 2/3 or even 1/3 of the shot most of the time.

Photos don’t support the text

When you’re talking about that wonderful campfire experience at the beach and an image of people walking by the seashore pairs with the text, your audience would have difficulty connecting two thoughts at once. Make your text sync with your choice of photo.

If you talk about jumping off a cliff, best to use a picture of you in midair instead of a photo of you getting ready for the jump.

Photos that ignore the basic photography principles

Photography is a broad subject but the basics of composition are simple enough to understand. It’s actually mastering of these simple techniques that could help your blog step to the next level.

Follow grid rule, golden ratio, whatever, there are plenty of composition guidelines you can apply to create that great shot of the place.
