We at @lapazcity have chosen the Avaroa Square (Plaza Avaroa) as our first post in this wonderful site.

Located at the historic center of the city of La Paz, Bolivia, is found the monument in honor of Eduardo Avaroa, immortal hero and maximum defender of the Bolivian maritime sovereignty.

His legendary courage during the War of the Pacific is and always will be the glory for Bolivians who pay him homage every March 23rd, the date of the Chilean invasion to the Bolivian territory through an unjust and surprising military action.

It was him who led a group of brave men against the invading soldiers at the Bridge of Topater, screaming with a loud voice a phrase that has perpetuated in immortality:

“Rendirme yo! Que se rinda su abuela carajo” Which in English means: Surrender, me? Let your grandmother surrender, you bastard!

After this he was riddled with bullets in the act, dying as a hero forever.

The monument reflects this famous phrase that has lasted in Bolivian history as a symbol of courage for all Bolivian soldiers.
