Books I've read recently

in #books5 years ago

A month ago there was the annual book fair in Belgrade, one of my favorite moments every year. This time around however I decided to start actually reading instead of just bying books and leaving them on shelves. There was a time when I used to read 50 books a year, but I've fallen out of that practice in the last 2 years. Here are a few I've read (/am reading) this month in an attempt to get back into it.

Haruki Murakami - South of the Border, West of the Sun

This is my first try at Murkami and I wanted to go with something not too heavy or filled with magical realism. This one is a short, contemporary novel about Hajime, a single child growing up in a post-war Japan. It's at times painful story about love, lust and bad decisions that can haunt you forever.

He writes about ordinary topics but making them feel so important and relatable. And by the end of the book you'll ask yourself if all of that was real or just someone's imagination.

Neil Gaiman - Norse Mythology

As a child, Neil Gaiman used to read a lot about Norse mythology and that influenced his work significantly. In this book he created his own interpretation of those myths in the form of an easy to read story. It tells about the wise Odin, his fearless and strong son Thor, crafty Loki and other inhabitants of this magical world, from its beginning till the days of Ragnarok.

It's a really well written and interesting story with twists and interpretions that bring new life to some previously known myths. Definitely a suggestion if you enjoy Gaiman's style of writing.

Ray Bradbury - Fahrenheit 451

This is a story about Guy Montag, a fireman who is employed to burn all the books that are out there and houses they've been hidden in with them. It's a world where all literature is strongly forbidden and the only thing that is allowed is TV programming. For years, Guy has been going to work and coming home without questioning if what he is doing is moral or not. Until he meets couple of unlikely acquaintances.

Quite an interesting story about how the media reduces interest for reading books but also what would happen if the people in charge decide to force opinions and brainwash the masses by forbidding any kind of critical thinking and education.

Joe Dispenza - You are the Placebo

I'm currently reading this one. It raises the question if we can heal our body from any disease or change our life in any way by simply changing our thoughts and emotions. Author then shares a lot of examples through history and from his own experience as a doctor where patients were drastically improving their life by altering the thought patterns. Quite an interesting read so far.

Do you have any suggestions? Winter is coming - perfect time for reading in front of the window. :)

Thanks for the suggestion! I think I can dive into his big novels yet, so a collection of short stories seems appropriate. :) Will check it out.

Gaiman <3 upravo tada sam i ja uzela jednu njegovu kao poklon...a za sebe Moore-ovog Watchmena. Preporucujem : )

Sjajan je Gaiman, planiram uskoro da se bacim na Okean na kraju puteljka. A nisam citao nista u strip formatu vec neko vreme. Svakako me zaintrigirao Watchmen. :)

cula sam da su dobre kritike za Okean, mada od njega ni ne ocekujem manje dobro. Da, strip je strava : )

Nisam citala Haruki Murikami ali sada cu definitivno poceti. 😊 Moj predlog Enderova igra i Govornik za mrtve Orson Scott Card...a moze i The Graveyard book Neil Gaiman.

Mislim da je ova koju sam naveo sasvim dobar uvod u Murakamija i da vidite da li vam se uopste svidja njegov stil. Citao sam The Graveyard book, sjajna je!

I would recommend The Dark Tower series, might take a while but it is worth. Any book from Roger Zelazny is a gem of fantasy world. :)

Cheers!

Thanks for the suggestion! I actually have a few long series already planned. Will add the ones you recommended to it. :)
