The Kindly Ones, Jonathan Littell. First US Edition.

I'm a big fan of this novel. Jonathan Littell, born in 1970, grew up living in both France and the US. He obtained his bachelor's degree from Yale, where he met William S. Burroughs, who made a lasting impression on him. Due to that influence, he began reading Burroughs, Sade, Blanchot, Genet, Céline, Bataille and Beckett and also worked as a translator, rendering French works by Sade, Blanchot, Genet and Quignard into English. He then spent nine years working for humanitarian organizations mainly in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In 2001, he decided to focus his career on writing. Out of this came his first novel, The Kindly Ones.

The Kindly Ones was first published in France in 2006, with the plot focusing on the fictional protagonist Maximilien Aue, a former SS officer of French and German ancestry who helped to carry out the Holocaust and was present during several major events of World War II. It's a massive book at 983 pages, and has gone on to win numerous prestigious literary awards. It's an incredible book, with a massive scope and deeply philosophical undertones regarding the banality of evil. I highly recommend it. This is the first US edition:
