Update On That Boulder That Crushed The Highway

in #bouldersunday5 years ago

Howdy folks! This is for #bouldersunday hosted by @shasta.

Last week I posted about a huge boulder than rolled down a mountain in Colorado and tore up highway 145. Actually it was 2 boulders but one crossed the road and landed on the other side, leaving an 8 foot deep ditch and the other landed right on the highway which totally blocked it.

Here's the one that landed on the highway:

Here's an aerial view of both of the boulders. You can see the one on the left that crossed the highway and left a trench:

Here's a close up of some of the highway damage:

A Geo-Technical crew drilled 15-20 holes, 15 feet deep in the main boulder blocking the road and explosives were placed and they blew the thing into little rocks:

I found out that there was a couple who were driving along the night that the landslide occurred and they narrowly escaped the boulders. Check this out from the durangoherald.com:

Ray Seeley and Dawn Whaley, both of Clifton, were driving southbound when they were struck by the rock slide.

“We came around the curve and saw dirt and rocks flowing across the highway,” Whaley said. “My boyfriend slammed on the brakes, and we were hit by debris. He threw it into reverse, and we backed up 20 feet until blocked by a downed power line behind us.”

When the dust settled, they had stayed on the road and were about 20 feet from a house-size boulder that landed in the middle of the road.

“It was the scariest thing I’ve ever seen. When I saw the size of the boulder, my knees went weak,” Whaley said. “We were very fortunate. Our guardian angels were watching over us.”

People behind the truck stopped on the other side of the downed power pole and rushed to check on them. The couple were uninjured, but the truck had been pummeled by rocks, including two cave-ins on the windshield.

A few seconds is the only thing that separated them from certain death!

Oh my god, that is enormous boulder. I am glad the couple has been fortunate and not hurt.

Howdy nelinoeva! I agree, the boulder was gigantic and the story was exciting, thanks so much!

Hrm. D'ya suppose they were listening to rock at the time?

lol! they probably were!

Wow! Boulder Sunday yields fantastic photos and great stories. When I was a child we used to drive from upstate New York to New York City on Route 9W--which runs along the edge a cliff for a stretch. Above was sheer rock, below a dizzying drop. The signs along the road read, "Beware of falling rocks". I always wondered what kind of rocks. Now I know :)

Howdy agmoore! haha! Yes these are major rocks! For some reason no one saw that there was a danger by having huge boulders hanging out above the highway on a steep slope. Thank God no one got smashed. Thanks so much for commenting!

All those dang stoners in Colorado causing accidents.

lol! all those stoners caused the big stones to come loose!

They really were lucky! That would be frightening.

Howdy Melinda! Your day has gone well? Has it rained all day? Yes, those people were so lucky barely avoiding getting crushed, wow!

The stuff nightmares are made of! All is well here... Just another quiet day in paradise.

lol! I'm thrilled to hear it! The paradise part. Same here so far.

Thanks for the follow up! What an amazing, frightful, freak act of nature.

The work to remove and repair is staggering.

I liked chapter two, too.

Howdy nana-nini! thanks so much. Yes I guess the repair back to normal is going to take weeks. I'll check back next week and see if they're done with it. lol.

Now that's a boulder! I wonder if there were any interesting gems and minerals in it? Should have let some rock hounds go at it with their rock hammers. Would have been cleared in no time!

lol! howdy sir rt395! That is so funny. They really should have though! lol. Thanks for commenting sir!

Scary stuff Cowboy! Their guardian angels must have been looking out for the couple.

exactly. well they were going to the casino to gamble and I don't know if they were lucky there but they sure were on that highway!

Buenas noches amigo @janton, deseo que se encuentre bien. Inmensa piedra amigo, que tenga una gran noche.

¡Hola señor edgargonzalez! Seguro que es, es increíble! ¡Gracias por comentar!

Hi janton, so very glad that we have not come across a boulder that size in our drives.

yes, that would have been very shocking but also great posting material! lol.
