What is a boulder? Question for bouldersunday - science

What is a boulder? No really. What is a boulder?

river boulder or.png
Original photo of a very powerful river, with well. A lot of energy and a lot of boulders!

But what are boulders?
Best way to figure that out is to go to the Wentworth Scale. Wentworth published this paper in the Journal of Geology Volume 30, Number 5, Jul. - Aug. in 1922! Almost 100 years ago.

Let's look at it shall we? (and if you want to see a big boulder, go to the bottom of this post)

Ah the wentworth scale... now I know what a boulder is!!!

So I guess it is rocks that are from 256 mm to 4096 mm in diameter. That means 25.6 cm to 409.6 cm. Or even better 0.256 m to 4.096 m. Sweet! And now you know...

But what is a block of rock larger than 4.096 m?
Happy #bouldersunday!

Happy boulder sunday @snowyknight!
That is so cool to see what is officially a
boulder size wise! :-)

The energy of that river looks to be
pulling that whole escarpment into
it, sure looks like it's leaning in.
'Clear as mud' lol
Where is this most beautiful place?
Off rock I might guess Africa?

Thank you for posting these awesome
boulders for #bouldersunday!

But what is the upper limit for a boulder? When does it become something else?

Great question...

I don't really know. At some point it just becomes a big rock and then a continent? Maybe someone else knows? Help! hahahaha

Thanks for stopping by!

I always thought a boulder was a big rock :D

haha... Megaboulder? Gigaboulder?

No matter the definition, your Boulder photo is lovely!

Thanks! Glad you like it!
