Celebrating Breastfeeding: Why I chose to breastfeed.

in #breastfeed5 years ago

I trusted my body to do something natural and beautiful—something it was created to do—and I couldn’t be happier. Cheers to 8 months of breastfeeding and many months to come on our journey.

I chose to breastfeed, because, although it is said that a happy and fed baby is best, breast milk is THE BEST. (I am not mom shaming anyone who formula feeds their baby.) Its 100% natural and organic; its uniquely created to completely meet all of your babies nutritional needs; protects your baby from illnesses; and adjusts to meet your baby’s specific needs. No other milk comes close. Breastfeeding is also really beneficial for mama! But in all honesty, for me, it’s just a beautiful bond between the two of us.

This journey has been beautiful, yes, but not without some tough days and plenty of sleepless nights. Although my son latched naturally immediately after surgery, his tongue tie had to be corrected the next day. After that, he fed like a champ, but it has not always been easy for me. Pumping was time consuming and uncomfortable; engorgement hurt like a b****; and who wants to wake up every 2 hours? But we got through it. Now it’s a breeze! We had an amazing support system which included my mom and our lactation consultant, who helped tremendously. I am so thankful for them.

My advice to any mom new to breastfeeding is to just be patient (sometime soon it takes time); seek support from a lactation consultant or breastfeeding mama; ask questions; rest; drink plenty of water; take care of yourself. NEVER feel ashamed for breastfeeding your baby in public or make anyone feel like you have to cover up. You’re not wrong. Feed your baby! But most importantly, TRUST your body and trust your baby. Enjoy this bond with your baby. It doesn’t last forever!
