With the worldwide Bitcoin boom, they are sprouting around the globe: Bitcoin machines. They are already available in 63 countries and allow fast exchange of Fiat money in cryptographic currencies. In Germany, however, vending machine operators are confronted with major hurdles. The responsible financial supervisory authority, BaFin, views bitcoin as a financial instrument - and puts barriers in the way of providers.

Mit dem weltweiten Bitcoin-Boom sprießen sie rund um den Globus: Bitcoin-Maschinen. Sie sind bereits in 63 Ländern verfügbar und ermöglichen den schnellen Austausch von Fiat-Geldern in kryptographischen Währungen. In Deutschland sehen sich die Automatenbetreiber jedoch mit großen Hürden konfrontiert. Die zuständige Finanzaufsichtsbehörde BaFin betrachtet bitcoin als Finanzinstrument - und stellt den Anbietern Hindernisse in den Weg.

Digital exchange offices are currently booming worldwide. According to the localisation service Coinatmradar, there will be nearly 2,400 Bitcoin ATMs around the globe. Reuters reports that around 15 new locations are added every day.

The lion's share of Bitcoin ATMs is currently overseas, in the USA and Canada. But business is also booming in Europe, especially in Great Britain, Austria and Switzerland. Operators in Eastern European countries such as Ukraine are also pleased with the lively interest.

In Germany, the situation for Bitcoin ATM operators and enthusiasts looks far less rosy at present. In this country, a permit from the BaFin financial supervisory authority is required.
It supervises and controls all areas of the financial system in Germany and classified Bitcoin as a unit of account as early as 2011. Bitcoin is thus regarded as a financial instrument for which corresponding rules apply.
This seems anything but child's play.

Digitale Wechselstuben boomen derzeit weltweit. Nach Angaben des Lokalisierungsdienstes Coinatmradar wird es rund um den Globus fast 2.400 Bitcoin-Geldautomaten geben. Reuters berichtet, dass täglich rund 15 neue Standorte hinzukommen.

Der Löwenanteil der Bitcoin Geldautomaten befindet sich derzeit in Übersee, in den USA und Kanada. Aber auch in Europa boomt das Geschäft, vor allem in Großbritannien, Österreich und der Schweiz. Auch Betreiber in osteuropäischen Ländern wie der Ukraine freuen sich über das rege Interesse.

In Deutschland sieht die Situation für die Betreiber und Enthusiasten von Bitcoin-Geldautomaten derzeit weit weniger rosig aus. In diesem Land ist eine Genehmigung der BaFin-Finanzaufsichtsbehörde erforderlich. Sie überwacht und kontrolliert alle Bereiche des Finanzsystems in Deutschland und klassifiziert Bitcoin bereits 2011 als Rechnungseinheit. Bitcoin gilt somit als Finanzinstrument, für das entsprechende Regelungen gelten. Das scheint alles andere als ein Kinderspiel zu sein.

Another example is the Saxon Volksbank Mittweida, as Reuters reports.
With a Bitcoin machine, the company wanted to be a pioneer in this area and keep
up with the times, but had to cancel all plans due to too high circulations.

Bitcoin-Maschinen werden noch immer in der Regel von Start-ups wie Cointed betrieben. Industrie und Banken haben es bisher nicht gewagt, Geschäfte zu machen und werden durch die hohen Anforderungen der BaFin entmutigt. So hält beispielsweise der Weltmarktführer Diebold das Geschäft für noch unausgereift. Ein weiteres Beispiel ist die Sächsische Volksbank Mittweida, wie Reuters berichtet. Mit einer Bitcoin-Maschine wollte das Unternehmen in diesem Bereich Pionierarbeit leisten und mit der Zeit gehen, musste aber wegen zu hoher Auflagen alle Pläne aufgeben.
