IKEA's Dirty Little Secret - They Operate as a Non-profit to Funnel Billions into the Family

in #business6 years ago

Most people would be surprised to learn that their favorite little (I mean big) Swedish household store has operated under different tax schemes spread across many countries which allow them to funnel money back to the Kamprad family with almost zero taxes collected and no real reporting on how much they take.

The company has been family controlled since its inception and has always presented itself as a quirky company from the Nordics that somehow made good. In reality, it has weaved a complicated mess of different companies and tax structures to ensure money flows behind dark curtains to the family without the public or authorities knowing much about it.

The scheme is so involved you almost need to read through it 2 or 3 times in order to understand the flow of money. This is a company that makes billions yet claims they are a non-profit devoted to promoting the art of interior design which is a cause they give very little to if you could call interior design a charitable cause to begin with.

How IKEA has done this for so long is mind boggling, the fact that they are still doing it is as well.
