You are either your own greatest asset or your own greatest liability. To enjoy new possibilities in your life, you must become more effective in everything. To be an effective person, you need to learn how to set goals. Goals help you regulate, motivate and direct your progress with whatever you are doing. A goal can be defined as an end toward which effort is directed. It can also be defined as an aim in your life (what u want to do or what you want to be). It can be an end that you are striving to attain. A goal can also defined as an object which one is seeking.

There are four mistakes that many people make;

  1. Some people don't set goals; meaning they make very very slow progress because of lack of meaningful goals. Goals make you more effective. Effective people have a calculated regimen that they follow.

  2. Some set goals but they don't set enough or relevant goals.

  3. Some set relevant goals but they don't follow the principles of goal setting. There is a proper way or order in which goals should be set.

  4. Some don't relate to their goals the way they should relate with it. For example, you set an alarm for 7am but when it rings, you switch it off and go right back to sleep. You definitely won't meet your goal.

Benefits of Goal Setting

What do we stand to gain if we set goals?

  • Goals help us to make successful changes in areas of our lives where we have not been able to achieve this i.e. in areas of saving, giving, prayers etc.

  • Goal setting protects us against procrastination. If you set your goal and relate to it as you should, then you would be able to free yourself from falling behind schedule or non-achievement.

  • Goal setting helps in moving us in the direction we ought or need to go; setting you on the right path.

  • It affords us the ability to increase beyond our former limits. It helps you to discipline yourself to do what you normally won't be able to do.

  • Goal setting also helps to protect us from the undue influence of other people. When your life is powered by goals, you won't be easily influenced or cajoled by opportunists.

  • They motivate us because goals fix our attention on the future, instead of looking back or looking around. Your focus will be on the changes and increase that are imminent.

  • Goals when achieved, help us to gain a sense of fulfillment and self confidence.

  • Goal setting helps to create targets on which we can expend our energy. It prevents you from scattering or wasting your energy.

Principles of goal setting

  • There are four different types of goals that we should set as believers :
    a) Life goals/major/macro goals are goals that concern your ultimate life for your next 20 to 25 years.
    b) These are medium term goals, monitored marks, intermediate goals or milestone goals which are set for a period of 5 to 10 years.
    c) There are short term goals or mini goals for a period of 1 to 5 years.
    d) There are the here and now goals or the daily/weekly/monthly goals that cover a 1 year period and this is my focus today. To be effective you have to focus on the now goals. They discipline and disciple us.

  • Set goals for every area of your life, spiritual, emotional life, financial life, social life, marital life etc. Any area you don't set goals for will be under developed

  • Differentiate between family goals , personal goals and organizational goals. Make each day count on all three fronts without neglecting the other.

  • Don't set goals haphazardly. Set goals after you have planned, strategized and done your research.

  • Set tangible definite measurable goals; goals that specify what your are going to do and when you're going to do it for a particular kind of result. Until it is specific, your goal cannot be dynamic or achievable. Be definite.

  • Do not set goals that would make you compromise your greatest purpose in life and the principles your life is built upon.

  • Set realistic goals, doable goals, achievable goals. Look at where you are and don't set goals that give the impression that you are out of your senses. Don't set goals that are too high or too low.

How do I relate to my goals

  • State your goals, write your goals and visualize your goals.

  • Be committed to your goal, meaning work hard at it. Be ready to do whatever you need to do to make sure that you fulfill the goal.

  • Be regulated by your goals. This means if you set alarm for 5.30am, don't snooze it.

  • Stick to your goals. Focus on your goals. Learn to be stubbornly persistent. Persistence will always overcome opposition.

  • Review your goals from time to time and measure how well you are doing. Reward yourself when you have met milestone targets.

I believe these are very practical steps that we can begin to implement immediately after reading this article. If you haven't been setting goals, please start now. Goal setting makes you productive and makes you a better and more effective person. Set goals for everything.
