LISTING SELF EMPLOYMENT ON YOUR RESUME
A lot of people have this misconception that listing self employment won't be valued by employers. Fact is not everyone have the entrepreneurial spirit to make money on their own, so that is a skill on it's own and makes you an asset. Therefore, if you are trying to use your CV to get back to a regular job or pursue a contract, here is how you can list your self employment experience
Highlight your achievements
In most cases, being self employed means that you have various experiences than your peers and that comes with unique skills that you should scream about on your resume. Whatever achievements you have had, talk about them! It might be a recent job or a contract but if the achievements are not related to the job you are applying for, the skills you acquired can be used so write them down.
Highlight your skills
Being self employed has an advantage of having varied skills. So highlight how being self employed helped you develop your skills which is an asset to the role you are applying for. It could handling finances, building relationships, or web development etc, write them down.
Provide an Evidence
For the self employed, evidence of your achievements and work are your reference, so be sure to provide them. For example, if you are a freelance writer, provide links to your articles. If you are a service provider, then you provide links to positive reviews or a website if you have one. So provide proofs of your achievements.
Be Professional
Don't just state self employed on your resume, give yourself a correct title, be it a contractor or a writer etc. Then list the projects you have worked on and the successes. It is important to list the ones relevant to the job you are applying for or the most recent ones. List the clients you worked for and the period and what you achieved for them etc.
Don't lie
You might be tempted to exaggerate your achievements because the employers might not be able to investigate your claims. But if you get called for an interview, you will be asked what was written on your resume, so be honest about your skills and achievements. Some interviewers can spot a lie from a mile away, so it's not worth the stress..
Now that you know that your skills as an entrepreneur is an asset, go ahead and include them in your resume if you decide to take a 9-5 job.
