I previously wrote a post on Why startups should pay more attention to hiring, check it out to know why. Now that we have a clearer picture of the importance of hiring, the question of how to begin becomes prevalent, especially if you are new to the process. Or if you got a new job in HR department of an organization and you are asked to be part of the hiring process of the organization, these are steps to take to have a smooth and effective hiring process that produces the best candidates.

Be As clear as possible

What are your work expectations? what do you expect from your ideal employee? The number of hours, their exact roles and responsibilities etc. Put them down in your job description. Be clear on the type of person you need and what you need from them to yourself, this will guide you in writing your job description. Also write it in a compelling way.

Shortlist

You'll probably get hundreds or thousands of applications, depending on how compelling and popular your job opening is. So you must shortlist and select the applications that best suits your needs and preferences, then focus on those ones in the next stages.

Do background checks

The truth is, people lie a lot on the resume, so don't believe everything you read. It is your duty to run background checks on your chosen candidates, such as their previous place of employment, criminal record, drug test etc This is your organization so you need to be careful who you let in.

Ask Tough Questions

During an interview, you need more than your instincts to pick the right candidate. This is why you should ask tough and elaborate questions, this will enable you to engage in a longer conversation with the candidate so that you can be able to discern their personality. So don't ask questions that require a yes or no answer, be more detailed and elaborate and be tough.

Get Their Identification

When you hire a person, make sure you get every official identification that can't be gotten online. So if something goes wrong, you'll be able to track the person.

Attract the right people

You have a vision and you want to hire a person who has the same vision or believes in your vision. So make sure your Job description align with your expectations, this will attract the type of people you need. With the right people on board, the sky is your limit.
