Antiguamente los mensajes de larga distancia se enviaban con un mandadero. la comunicación por señales, banderas o signos que permitían deletrear palabras, fue el primer método practico para transmitir mensajes. El francés Claude Chappe fue uno de los pioneros en 1974, el gobierno revolucionario francés empleo estas señales para enviar ordenes a sus ejércitos en la frontera.

Otro sistema de comunicación visual empleado por los ejércitos eral el heliógrafo que significaba escritura solar.
