I have been on steemit for about six months, I agree with what you say. My personal experience has been :
Consistency, keep blogging on a regular basis, as new bloggers we need exposure.
Content, find what you are good at, we can't all be fantastic photographers or raconteurs but we are all good at something. Find your niche. Research your topic, if you are going to post, make sure the content is correct.
Replies, there is nothing worse than sending a one word reply. If you have nothing to say, upvote and move on. Remember the poster spent time and effort writing their post.
Rewards. We all like to receive good rewards, but it takes time and effort, so be patient, it will come.
As for benefits, all I can say that in my case it has given me confidence in my own abilities, new friends and something new to look forward to everyday.

I think the crucial point is to be consistent and don't give up posting content and share your knowledge.
I have experienced too, that it might take some time, to get the attention you deserve.

Along with the points you mentioned, let me add few.
Opportunity to spread you talent: there are number of contests hosted by different people where you can share your talent for example, music, photography, painting , art and all.
People: Different people from different location and their culture, history and many more (could be included in knowledge) .
Steemit is a great platform where your knowledge and ideas and talent could be shared and appreciated apart from the money. Good post!!! voted!!
You are absolutely correct..good point indeed
I think that the best thing about Steemit is that it awards quality content. Not that I don't think that on the other social platform good stuff has a chance to float to the top. It's just that I feel that considering how people think about building their network in terms of a long-term investment they tend to be a bit more careful in what they are following, upvoting and/or promoting. In the long run, this will, by default, result in good things and interesting people to be in the focus.

I transitioned my vlogs from Youtube to DTube before New Year's.. and I'm certain that this is the right move! If you are a new blogger/vlogger and you're aiming to sustain yourself through this, the STEEM Blockchain (Steemit for bloggers, DTube for vloggers) is definitely the best place for you to be at!!

Interesting post. Just out of curiousity, what do you find is a better use of your time in a cost/benefit analysis? Writing blogs or putting in the time to do shoot and edit a vlog?
It depends on what you can do best. Some prefer to write and some that are more comfortable vlogging. You can just use your smart phone to vlog and post via Dtube.
