There has never been a summer like this one before in Sweden. Record after record have been broken with extreme heat that seems more tropical than the normal Luke warm summers we have. In the same time that we love the sun here and treasure it, something feels completely off.

Only small changes in temperature can have a huge effect and now the temperature seems to be rising extremely fast. They speak of water levels that can increase by 50-60 meters when the Arctic ice melts. Something that we have been shrugging our shoulders to in the past is becoming a much closer reality day by day.

Let’s hope we see big changes fast and more respect for our earth and the nature it provides.

You must have meant to write North Pole, i.e. the Antarctic. If the ice in the Arctic Ocean melts completely, it has no effect on sea water levels.

Last month was the warmest July on record in Finland. June was only slightly warmer than average.

The hot summer of 2018 in Northern Europe is a symptom of global warming only indirectly. The polar areas warm faster than the rest of the world. That results in a smaller temperature difference between the polar areas and the temperate regions. That temperature difference is what causes air to sink towards the ground in the upper atmostphere (the upper edge of the dense lower layer of the atmosphere is lower in the cold polar regions). That sinking air causes a vortex to form in the upper parts of the atmosphere where there is a fast-moving band of air called the jet stream. The jet stream determines the trajectories of low pressure centers at ground level. When the temperature difference is relatively small, the whole system becomes less intense and the jet stream slows down and begins to meander. That results in the same type of weather staying put longer in a particular region. This summer, Northern Europe has experienced persistent blocking high pressure systems and an influx of air from warmer regions. The North Atlantic (Iceland inluded) has ended up on the colder side of the jet stream and experienced consistent unseasonably cold weather.

The summer was very similar in 2014 and in 2010. 2006 was a hot summer, too, and so was 2003. The summer of 2017 was quite average temperature-wise but was wetter than average.

Thank for pointing out my mistake ! You sure know your stuff my friend - impressive :) actually I have noticed overall that you have quite a broad knowledge - are you a teacher or something ?

I just like to know stuff.

We have gotten some rain the past few days, but still rather dry. I just mowed yesterday.

Wow that’s a big lawn ! many people around where I live only mowed there lawns 2-3 times so far this summer, that how dry it is. Your lawn does look dry but still has some nice green color in some places.

How long does it take to mowe your lawn ? If you don’t mind me asking

Of course I dont mind you asking lol. About an hour or so. Because it was so dry it was quite bouncy, so I was not going full speed. It mows at top speed of 8mph. I use a John Deere 525 zero turn.

This is not at my home, so I trailer the mower there :)

I see, this mower is the size of the ones they use on golf courses lol! John Deere is a brand many like here in Sweden for a bit bigger machinery
