Freewrite Day 385 I Know!

My ex-husband was a counselor and he did not like the phrase “I know.” He said we do NOT know what other people are going through and saying “I know” makes it seem like their stories, complaints, troubles, and highlights were common and not individual.

He worked with adults in a group home setting for some of the time we were married. These adults could not live on their own but were not broken enough to be institutionalized. They had issues such as low IQ, mental illness, and emotional problems. The place consisted of several homes in a cul-de-sac. Each home had several men in it and they took care of their own spaces. Some had jobs and others had disability.

My ex worked shifts of something like three days on and four days off. He worked and lived in the main house during those times which also had common areas. I used to go over there for meals a few times a month, so we could try to keep our life together. I was always struck by how kind he was to the residents when they came in with offbeat questions or comments. They did this continually and he was welcoming and helpful to each of them every time they came in.

After this experience, I have tried not to say “I know” when people tell me anything. It is better to hear what they know and learn something new.
