Wednesday Walk: walking along the old canal in Bangkok,

in #busy5 years ago (edited)

This is my entry for #wednesdaywalk hosted by @tattoodjay. Time flies so fast, Wednesday is here again. This was my walk along the old canal on my way to Prince Palace Hotel where Steem Fest4 will take place.

I got off at the bus stop opposite an old school. It’s strange I never noticed this old gothic building in the school before. The renovation and new paint made this European style building stood out like a sore thumb. The canal by the bus stop looked very peaceful.

The old pedestrian bridge had been beautifully restored; the wrought iron was imported from England. There water in the canal has become much cleaner than school children could go fishing!

This was a slow walk in the evening along the canal called Klong Maha Naga (Great Water Snake canal) which used to be the trading hub of produce from farms and fields around the suburb of Bangkok. People would be rowing their boats full of fruits and vegetables to the Maha Naga market.

Time has changed the old way of living; now fruits are transported by small trucks to the modernised market with proper roof and a big car park. But the canal is still the same and the old trees along the canal have grown much bigger.

I was surprised to see some old wooden houses which I saw on my way to my primary school years ago. I still remember seeing so many boats jamming the canal, some were stuck as the tide went down. There were lots of noises from people shouting about the fruits they had to offer the Chinese merchants. Lots of men pushing trolleys of fruits along the road by the canal.

This slow walk took me almost forty minutes. It was very nice to walk the old road of my childhood memory. Things keep on changing through time and so is my life. This walk made me very nostalgic of the simple and stable past; but life goes on moving. I could see the hotel from the bridge.

This is very hard to find nowadays! These are dried squids which have to be slowed roasted over a charcoal stove. Then it would be pressed and extended into long strips of fragrant roasted squid to be dipped in peanut sauce.

Very cheap street food stall right in front of the hotel! It’s pork noodles stall which should be opened till very late.

I like visiting your posts because you always have such interesting things! Your culture is so different than mine and so I look forward to seeing the canals where the produce would be sold on the river - just thinking about is amazing. (Vietnam has the same kind of WaterMarket)

I admit I am in love with the culture and in some ways, it saddens me to see it get Westernized. I am not sure how the people of Thailand feel. It is such a wonderful little country and I guess I don't want it to change!

Thank you for taking me along with you!

Thank you very much for your very kind comment. I am afraid we could not stop the momentum of materialistic progress and scientific development which will inevitably cause changes in our societies, culture and psyche. For better or for worse, we cannot stop these changes.

Only small groups of Thai people appreciate and understand the old values of living a modest and non-greedy life style. Nowadays people want to achieve more material or worldly success and security. When the old generations are all gone, Thailand would just become like any highly developed countries.

But there’ll be some places where people still keep the old culture and life style while trying to live on the land. I just hope that people would become spiritual and down to earth, then we may still have a chance of not destroying all the good things in our culture.

Hoping for the best with positive vibes!
Wishing you a very nice day, everyday!

This place has changed a lot, no more fruit stalls, no more cheap clothes by the street!

I won’t be in Bangkok that weekend. But I will meet up with some friends from Europe later. The price for the 4 days program is very high for Thai standard. That doesn’t include the hotel! We still don’t have daily schedule so it is risky paying half the Thai monthly salary for a get together party. It’s not a good investment for a vegetarian who doesn’t drink beer either.

For Thai people who cannot speak English as a second language, it is no fun at all. The cultural difference will also hamper the fun, this is very subtle consideration. This is party for the big fish and whales, you need money to get into the rich circle.

But this is good for tourism industry!
Cheers.
