Random Thoughts and Gut Reactions

in #busy5 years ago (edited)

It's no secret that for the better part of this decade, the left has pretty much held power in all of South America. As with any ideology, there were lots of good things and a lots of perversions that took place, and of course this always happens because us, the humans, can't seem to hold on to our ideals when too much money is involved.

It seems however, that today we live in a world of massive corruption, of rampant chaos, but that may be only the case because the media is nothing more than a propaganda machine fighting for our attention. As a matter of fact, there's actually at this very second thousands upon thousands of bright minds attempting to trick us into watching an ad, staying engaged with a video for a second longer, clicking on a banner, etc, and that is the focus of their career and their contribution to society.

I believe that knowing this, understanding how the attention economy has spawned is not only important, but crucial to our mental health. I mean, we've all been there, someone shares a post, a tweet, something designed to ignite rage in us, and like moths attracted to fire we take the bait and end up fighting for causes that don't really belong to us. One would think that reacting with the gut, that not digging further, checking for sources and what have you, is something that only unintelligent people do, but the opposite is actually what happens.

But going back to the reason I started to write this weird post of mine, going back to this notion of the gut reaction. Can we learn to be better? Can we recognize that in most cases, the initial reaction an article or an image for that matter, should be met with skepticism? I mean, I can talk about this until I'm blue in the face, but; Are we capable, as a society, to overcome the sinister system we created? Can we leave the outrage machines, the propaganda farms, the click generators and all the garbage that pollutes our mental bandwidth behind?

You see, I would love to say that yes, that we will overcome it, that we can and should do better, but it seems like we are still walking in the wrong direction, but maybe, just maybe, I'm wrong, and that would be one of those rare instances were being is wrong is precisely what I want.

Hi @meno,
Thank you for this great article.
We live in a world where people tend to spend their energy to sell something that people do not need. Be it products or news. Since there is no need, the need has to be created first. This means that for everybody it becomes difficult to grasp the value of what they are doing. In the end so much energy goes into efforts that have a sole purpose to make money...
So much energy is spent to influence our minds and to make us buy stuff that could be used to really improve our lives. The problem is that most people don't even ask themeselves anymore whether there couldn't be a better way...

If you believe that human nature is in and of itself not greedy, then yes. But if you believe that we are all capitalists at heart and only want to maximize our own personal gain, then I’m afraid you are right where you really want to be wrong.

Well written.

Excellent review @meno and of course we must overcome the wrong thinking, because if we don’t do this, then we will have a dead end!

It is the herd mentality and anything seen as opposing it will be seen as a a threat and will instigate individuals. However, most movements like these takes time to develop and grow as society recognizes but doubts it too often.

As one of those professionals whose job it is to get online attention and clicks I feel we’ve built a system where people aspire to be outraged since everyone feels special everyone feels they have a voice they’re going to use it, yes these concepts meant well and the. were bastardized and now it can be manipulated is unfortunate but in the end it’s all about controlling the narrative and keeping the status quo

Feeding You enough to be distracted but not enough for you to want to do anything about it
