I would use downvotes sparsely. they are not appreciated, not used lightly and not simply a dislike. I believe they power you down more too than upvotes (not entirely sure about that).

Attention usually you get via posting comments on other stories. obviously thoughtful comments, concerning topics not random bullshit then rather everyone will ignore you.
