Change In Steem Distribution Levels

in #busy5 years ago

Last week I put together a post that broke down the number of accounts that were present at different levels.

https://busy.org/@taskmaster4450/steem-distribution-levels

This was motivated by a breakdown I came across about Bitcoin wallets.

Knowing what the distribution of STEEM is important. However, finding out the pace of the change is equally as valuable. Since this is a process I just started, it will take a bit of time to figure out the exact pace. For now, we are establishing a baseline of which to compare.

I use the data provided by Steemitboard put together by @arcange.

I did a post a couple days later just as a comparison. I will be doing this once a week or, perhaps, every other week. Either way, we will see if the pace speeds up or slows down over time.

https://busy.org/@taskmaster4450/changing-times-on-steem-adding-depth

The important criteria is that Steem keep adding depth. To be a thriving blockchain, we need users. That said, I do not feel that total accounts is a good barometer. Yes, it is the starting point but we know there are a lot of accounts that sign up, do a couple clicks, and then depart.

To me the starting point is the number of total accounts that earn a single SP. The reason I feel this was is two-fold. First, each new account is someone who did something to earn STEEM. Somehow, the STEEM got into the account and was powered up.

The other reason is because we are expanding the amount of people who have some form of crypto. This is vital for the industry in general. We need more people, overall, to engage in cryptocurrency and new accounts gaining SP is a good start.

Obviously, we cannot determine if every new account is a separate, new person but we can presume a large amount of them are.

Here is the chart with the comparison from a week ago to today.

steem.png

The "Difference" is the number of new accounts that reached each level throughout the week. We see the pipeline starts with another 545 accounts that have a single SP as compared to the previous read.

From these numbers we see the depth of distribution going deeper. At the same time, more accounts are moving up the scale to higher levels. This is exactly what the ecosystem needs.

Another chart I created was the percentages at different levels for the accounts that did achieve at least 1 SP.

This chart is from last week. There is little point updating since the percentages didn't vary much. I will have to figure how often this should be changes; perhaps monthly.

steem.png

This chart shows that of the accounts that get at least 1 SP, 45.12% go on to get 10 SP. Following down the column, .84% of all accounts that get a single SP end up reaching Dolphin status (5k SP).

The next column does the same. Of all that accounts that 10 SP, 21.22% go on to get 100 SP.

And so on.

The goal is to see the pace of accounts reaching these levels increase over time. As the number of applications on this blockchain grow and the amount of people using the applications expands, we should see the entry level, 1 SP, increase. Of course, this will require the applications onboarding users themselves which is starting to take place albeit on a minimal scale.

We all would love to see these numbers triple overnight. That aside, as long as we see progress each week, we know things are moving ahead. The pace might not be where any of us want it yet we can see, slowly, the ecosystem is growing.

As long as the direction goes the right way, it is encouraging progress. However, I just came across an interesting post from @dustsweeper that shows that in order for users to provide votes that will not be turned into dust after the lastest HF, you would need 770 SP! While this is only around $300 at today’s prices, this could be another issue that can impact those smaller account from growing. After reading this, I have become more purposeful at seeing comments and their vote values and if I see them below $0.02, I am trying to push them over to assist...

One of the reasons I still have a lot of faith (or, at least, "hope") in Steem and its various social front ends is precisely that it is one of the very few ways to offer easy mass access to cryptos... through a means most people are familiar with: Social media.

Whereas I believe the "make money" aspect has been misrepresented (and is the cause of some of our ills) and should perhaps be rebranded as "build stake in the platform you use," I think we have something unique here that is well worth building on.

I do agree with that. Even with Steemit.com being ignored, I think the blockchain is in fantastic shape to provide people with an entryway into cryptocurrency. There are enough front end interfaces for people to use.

Yes the idea that you mentioned make more sense than make money for blogging or whatever. People are owning a stake in what they use.

What kind of breakdown about bitcoin wallets did you see?

It was a breakdown of the Bitcoin wallets. A simple search will bring up a number of results I am sure.

@hefziba There is a guy on YT who occasionally checks on top BTC wallets to see what kind of money is being moved around. He uses bitinfocharts dot com to show how hundreds of millions of dollars worth are quietly being bought. The video is a bit dry, but if you can sit through it, he does provide a compelling case. Since we need BTC to buy Steem it would follow that there are also more BTC wallets holding smaller amounts.

I didn’t find this dry at all, and very interesting. Thank you

I didn't either! Quite an interesting post. Please take time out to read this ma'am

Hey Task, have you ever thought about running a witness? :D

LOL No even for a second @phoenixwren.

I am not a techie so setting up a node is well beyond me.

I will stick to researching, promoting, and supporting.

Lol I understand!

Thanks for you analysis. Do you have data about how many dolphins are achieving Orca level? I did it last Saturday...

Posted using Partiko Android

I decided not to monitor the Orca and Whale levels simply because there are so few and such little change.

Congrats on reaching Orca. You were one of a handful, that is all. There are only a few Orcas reached in a month.

Thanks! You are doing terrific work for the community...
