in #busy5 years ago

I last reported the numbers in a post that covered through August 31, 2018.

https://steemit.com/busy/@taskmaster4450/steem-whales-are-losing-their-power-the-system-is-not-broken-report-through-9-30-2018

Each month I monitor what is going on with new accounts and the amount of MVests in each category. I do this to determine what trends are taking place.

Now that we are at end of month, time to post the numbers again.

I want to thank @arcange for the work done each day compiling these numbers and making the charts.

We have 3 months worth of data for analysis purposes to see how the 90 trend might be.

The first chart is from August of 2017, the month I started on Steem. It is placed here to provide some contrast to see how things are changing over a longer period of time.

Here is the breakdown.

So what does this all tell us?

To start: The system is working as designed.

The Whales are losing power.

This month, it was the Dolphins and Orcas picking up the biggest gains. The Dolphins crossed 50K MVests in totality, a nice achievement.

In terms of numbers of users, the Dolphins picked up an impressive 51 accounts. The Whales are down one for the month which, I presume, accounts for one of the four the Orcas gained.

There are now 11.024 accounts who qualify as either Dolphin or Minnow. It was only a few months back when the total accounts above the approximate 500 SP (level to be a Minnow) was under 10K.

On August 31, 2018, the Whales and Orcas had 308,813 MVests (78.10% of the total); on September 30, 2018, 307,559 MVests (77.70% of the total)...a decrease of .51%....On October 31, 2018, 309,485 MVests (77.55% of the total)...an decrease of .19%.

It is important to remember these numbers are owned SP. This is not delegated. Since @steemhunt came into being, a lot of SP was delegated so it is equivalent to a Whale yet does not register as such. This is vital since that SP is used to upvote content by the members who post on that application. Ergo, we have a Whale (equivalent) upvoting smaller accounts.

In conclusion, the numbers are changing over time. It might not be happening as fast as some like but it is taking place. Continual working of the system does yield dividends.

Thanks for putting this together. Sometimes it helps to have an overview from 30,000 feet. When things move incrementally every day it seems like nothing is happening. This yearly analysis demonstrates there is real movement and in the right direction. HODL everybody!

Very awesome analysis, we need more of these in depth state of the network reports from community members

So are we just losing whales because they are powering down and turning into orcas / dolphins because they are loosing faith in steem?

No, @taskmaster4450 did a post not to long ago about (cant find it atm) 'whales being selfish or not' it Seems they're spreading the wealth, thus growth for others!

Though the numbers may say that I don't think he takes into account that they are just voting on other accounts that they own so it appears they are voting for others. Take haejin for instance. he circle jerks himself with star juno and rancho relaxo. sweetsssj has a 20 alt farm she runs and has them all circle jerk voting herselt. you have darksaint and his traf circle jerk army that he votes himself with. the list goes on and on. just because they are voting for a different account on paper does not mean they are not self voting

Selfishness is not in the human heart. So surely it will spread

Nobody is losing faith in Steem. It's just that more than a few thousand Steem is already in over-powered mode lol.

Too much is never enough.

Wisdom tells otherwise

I am trying to power up. My target is to reach 50.000 SP and being an Orca.

In ten years, each SP = $1000. Welcome to fuck you money.

But in 10 yrs automation will be here and global abundance so everyone will have access to digital and physical abundance even the regulars ;-)

Oh wow, you're pretty close, 16k SP nice :)

We need more minnows!
We are growing these are great news.

These are truly impressive year over year figures that are great to see. What is better is that the trend seems to continue in the right direction as many are taking advantage of the low Steem price to power up into higher categories (I know I have). I think a positive implication of the low price is that it seems more attainable for accounts to reach minnow and dolphin status by small increments which is what I think we are witnessing. I think that it would be interesting to see how active these categories are as I also think we will find that minnows and dolphins are taking advantage of the low activity to also get a larger part of the rewards while whales are not. Great trend to see!

"If you found this article informative, please give an upvote and resteem." : Of course.

Always nice to see it flattening. You want to take profits, it's going to cost you some influence.

Numbers seem good. Did some whales power down though? I'd like to know how many powered down or are starting to power down.
