Here's another good comparison to use with your dad I found to be useful when explaining "where the money comes from".
Where does the money come from when a startup raises capital?
Let's say you have a great idea for a startup and sell 25% of your shares to an interested investor for 250.000 euro. The 75% you still hold is now worth 750.000 euro.
But but... where did this money come from?
Nowhere!
It's just a market valuation.
The same holds true with crypto, just way more volatile and determined by speculation.
