Sharp Escalation
Most of the world has been bombarded with the news on the Rohingya of Myanmar's west. But for some odd reason, the international community is pretty much silent on the older war in Myanmar's north that has taken on a new ferocity against the predominantly Christian indigenous: the ethnic Kachin.
The ethnic Kachin group resides at the Kachin Hills inside Myanmar's Kachin State and contiguous areas of India (Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland) and China (Yunnan). Their population in Myanmar is made up of mostly Baptist and Roman Catholic Christians. Whereas in India, they are predominantly Buddhists.
From 1885 to 1947), the colonial British treated most Kachin territory as a frontier region. And after the British departure in 1947, Myanmar the new political master came in, who treated most of the Kachin areas as a semi-autonomous unit of Myanmar with military coercion.
After the killings in the Rakhine state, the Myanmar army has escalated their violence – which include aerial bombing – on the ethnic Kachin. Aid has been cut off for the latter group and displaced them in the tough environment without food and water. The situation of their women and infants is very grim.
The world has stood up for the Rohingya families but who will stand up for the victims of world's longest-running war?
