B&W Photo Contest Theme: Travel ~ Prambanan

An old favourite... the 9th century Prambanan Hindu temple complex
Situated in Central Java, just outside of Jogjakarta (Yogyakarta), there are reputedly 240 temples, although most lie in piles of rocks today, with some awaiting restoration, and only the main large ones have been restored sufficiently for visitors to go inside
This UNESCO World Heritage Site has been damaged a number of times by earthquakes, the latest in 2006 and affected by volcanic ash from the eruption of Mt Kelud as recently as 2014

Something to watch out for is the staging of the Ramayana ballet during full moon nights of the dry season from May to October, with a stunning backdrop of the lighted temples

What are the restored temples like from the inside? They must feel ancient and amazing.

Ancient and amazing - I totally agree with you!
Here's the inside of one of them, the Shiva temple

That's my nephew there who stands nearly one head above me! So, you can see the size of this statue...

Holy crap that's awesome! Haha, it certainly does give the deity locale impression.

Open theater ballet in that ancient place must be an experience of a lifetime @ackhoo

Sad to hear nature is damaging such a wonderful piece of history and architecture.

Visiting from @qurator

Hi @joanstewart - yes... we missed the one that performs here but instead caught the one done at their indoor theatre, still remarkable but I would love to watch one outside with that backdrop! :)
Thank you very much, Joan!

Stunning! looks a bit like Ankhor

Yes, indeed, @jfolkmann... Very similar but this is even older! Quite an experience standing amidst the corridors within...
Thank you! :)

240 temples?! Omg that's insane! I've never been into a temple and there are 240? I'm so jelly haha.
Even though most of them are ruins and can't be visited by tourists, I'm sure the landscape of this place says more than the history itself. :)

Lol... yes, sadly many are just piles of stones... They are still in the midst of rebuilding what they can.
As I understand it, those shrines with 75% of their masonry available will be rebuilt.
