Film 2 Catfish

For years, people has used online social media as a dating source to connect with romance. As a different kind of online dating. Catfishing gives a different lens through which to study online dating and foster all kinds of relationships between individuals. In the movie “Catfish” the 2 main characters express different types of emotions towards each other that connects to the interpersonal communication process. The movie “Catfish” indicates interpersonal communication characteristics of listening skills, nonverbal communication and communication channels between the 2 characters.

One of my understandings to the movie is the effective listening process. During the movie of “Catfish” the character Nev showed interactions of the remembering process. The remembering process is includes being able to store something in your memory and retrieve it when needed. Nev did this process through out the movie. He started when he recognized the selected song that was sent to him by the girl, Angela, the girl he thought he was interested in. He also repeated the process again when he showed up to Angela house when interviewed the made up lover sister.

At the same time, Angela showed a lot of immediacy behavior towards Nev, that also takes us back to how she connected to interpersonal communication. Immediacy behavior is shown by smiling, touching, using warm vocal tones and standing or sitting close to each other. According to Angela behavior towards Nev, she showed these traits . She went from smiling hard when Nev showed up at her house with flowers and also standing very close while standing next to the car door as Nev was getting ready to leave from the beach. Angela tried to use these traits to maintain a good relationship with Nev.

Then again, Nev intended a physical appearance on Angela. That also takes us back to the interpersonal nonverbal communication process. Placing physical appearance tends to place judgement about people based on their looks. Nev from the gate knew that something was up when he first met Angela and interviewed the sister of the made up character, Megan. He judged her by her looks, by the way she was acting and her demeanor. Along with the answers she would give when asked a question.

To conclude, both Nev and Angela used their interpersonal communication skills to get what they want. Nev wanted answers on why Angela would lie and make up a fake person and Angela wanted a relationship that she knew that would never be.
