The mating process in cats is a delicate event that needs to be handled with care. When the queen finally calls and all arrangements have been made, it is time to make the journey to the stud. The state of heat indicates the period where the queen is ovulating and is fertile. The rendezvous will be arranged so that the queen will take residence at the living quarters of the male. Preparing this space is essential and an introduction is necessary to start the process. This is sometimes referred to as a dating between the pair and precautions and preparations are needed. Cats that are meeting and ultimately mating require a space to roam and explore. The space should be free of free standing objects that may break and elevated surfaces are appreciated. A full disinfection of both the male and female living quarters is necessary and should be kept clean throughout.

Cat mating can be a risky affair and as many precautions as possible are to be taken by both breeders. In most scenarios, there will be confrontations between the male and female cats. For this reason, breeders will clip the claws of both cats prevent any major injuries. The clips claws will be refined and polished to further reduce risk. Choosing an experienced male is essential and new queens will benefit from the treatment it will receive from the mature cat.
