Cat Poisoning

Venomous bites, stings and many other injuries can be very hard to deal with. Poisoning is another situation to be aware of. Cats will explore and wander around the household and neighbour to satisfy their momentary lapse of boredom. While gallivanting, they remain curious and will probably lick or gnaw at anything that catches their eye. Unfortunately there may be an instance where a cat will meet a toxic situation in which it may end up ingesting poisonous substances. Corrosive substances in particular will cause a great deal of immediate pain and burn the areas it comes into with little time wasted. This is a dire situation that requires immediate attention from an owner.

Calming the suffering companion is needed at this stage. A cat in continuous episodes of pain will be vulnerable. Gentle approaches and securely moving the cat to a quiet and sterile area is essential. Water will provide immediate relief and washing with lighter shampoos will help to cleanse the wounds without aggravating things much further. Once relief treatment has been given (or even before), contact with a vet should be made to schedule immediate treatment. A cat’s situation may be even worse than it appears as certain substances may even cause convulsive vomiting, blindness and even collapse of the cat. If a cat is found initially to be suffering from any similar symptoms this is a great cause for concern and requires medical attention from a professional as soon as possible.

In this state of heightened pain, trying to calm a cat down may be ineffective as significant measures of pain are currently being experienced by the cat. Swiftly and gently securing the cat for transport to the vet is advised in this situation. The most that can be done in this situation is to wrap the cat in something comfortable and warm and arrange smooth and swift transport to a vet for treatment. It is advisable to identify what the cat has consumed and relay this information to the vet over the phone. A sample may also be taken for inspection on arrival to help deduce what a cat has ingested. Health and safety measures are important here and seemingly hazardous chemicals should never be handled by a person. Household items such as bleach may be fine in this instance. If the substance is unknown, do not approach it or attempt to take a sample. A vet will be able to source an antidote or at least arrange for the correct treatment if the substance is known.
