Cats that are regarded as non-pedigree are not inferior in any way to the standardised recognised breeds, they are simply unstructured in their breeding. It is common for non-pedigree cats to exhibit some of the most desirable features when reviewed against their counter pure bred lines.

The main area of uncertainty that many breeders are wary of relate to genetic health issues. With an unknown lineage, there may be hereditary conditions that are introduced in a cat. This is a difficult aspect to monitor within non-pedigree cats that could share a genetic pool with many others that cause long term health issues. Generally, knowing the lineage of a cat will help to establish a healthy lifespan in a cat and will also allow for carers to understand the requirements of the cat coming into their care.

Owners who care for non-pedigree cats have done so with much success by following standard procedures. The most important part of caring for cats lies within planning and preparation. Having a local vet on hand to assess and carrying out regular health check-ups will help identify any potential health conditions. There are many treatments that can help alleviate health conditions and an owner should not be discouraged from keeping a non-pedigree cat due to the unknown lineage. In fact, even within well-established pedigrees there are conditions to be aware of and this is simply something that most owners will come to be aware of and deal with.
