Venomous Bites

Depending on the geographical location of one’s residence, there may be a risk that a cat may encounter poisonous creatures in the local neighbourhood or even within the household. Cats are predators and proud creatures that will defend themselves where necessary. Confrontation with a snake is not uncommon and a cat will engage in battle without hesitation. Unfortunately this can lead to a number of bites from the opposition that may even be venomous. When observing a cat that has suffered a snake bite, there are some tell-tale signs to look out for. Lethargic movements and noticeable lack in response will be the first signs of a problem. Audible hyperventilation will occur after some time and may even eventually lead to the collapse of cat. It is important to inspect the cat’s body to discover if any bites have been inflicted, there will be noticeable swelling in the injured area.

Once again, being prepared for this situation is key and having a suitable tourniquet on hand to apply onto the wound. It should be noted that if the wound has been inflicted on any sensitive areas such as the neck or head, no tourniquet should be applied and immediate professional treatment is required. The applied pressure is used to limit or stop the venom from spreading further into the bloodstream where it will take effect and cause significant damage. Cutting the blood supply will limit further exposure temporarily but needs to be loosened at intervals to allow for resupply of blood to the limbs. This is at the expense of releasing more venom in the blood stream but is essential to keep flesh live. Neglecting this need will result in most dire consequences in which a cat may have to undergo amputation. Having a mental count or an actual timer to help keep a track of this may help. Nonetheless, the goal is limit as much venom as possible entering the blood stream while keeping a fresh blood supply entering the segregated limb on a regular basis before professional help arrives.

Cats that have been bitten will be a panicked state and will need reassuring during the ordeal. As the venom seeps in, their senses will begin to suffer and their general composure will deteriorate. The use of a blanked and soothing words will help keep a cat calm as an owner blocks the venom and seeks a vet’s attention. A second pair of hands to continue this treatment during transport is recommended and consultation of an emergency line is recommended once a bite is discovered.
