Shrike - Lanius - executioner

Today was a wonderful day. The weather forecast was sad, the rains promised, but, apart from a few clouds about the rain, nothing resembled. We went to the village, to visit relatives. On the way, we stopped the car several times and I let my camera drain the battery. There were many interesting finds and meet. One such meeting in this photo. My son and I decided to inspect the surroundings of the village and on one thorn I saw this shrike. It was strange to see a bird, not the smallest, it is slightly smaller in size than a pigeon, and larger than a sparrow, sitting on a spiny herbaceous plant. I tried to get closer. The sun was beginning to set, visibility was getting worse. I was able to shoot one time from the camera. The second shot I did not have time to do. The shrike noticed us, took off and disappeared in the bushes. But, it was very gambling hunting. I could not see the bird completely, but judging by the color of the wings and the black streak on the head near the eyes, it was the shrike.
Interestingly, I did not know this before. The Latin name of this bird is translated, as the butcher, the butcher, the one who makes the sacrifice. Shrike the victims sacrifice on prickly branches of plants, where insects, lizards, frogs, which the shrike caught, slowly die. Thus, the shrike makes its supplies for the winter.
