Chennai is known as the "gateway to southern India". The city is the other part of India and internationally well-coordinated. India's five main national highways connect this city with Kolkata, Bangalore, Trichy, Tiruvallur and Pondicherry. The Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus (CMBT) is used as a terminus for intercity bus connecting to Chennai. This is the largest bus terminus in South Asia. Seven government transport companies operate interstate and inter-state bus services. In addition, many private bus companies also operate interstate and intercontinental services from Chennai.

Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) operates a comprehensive bus system in the city. 2773 buses have 375 routes, and it is estimated to transport approximately 42 lakh passengers daily. In addition to the MTC service, the suburban suburb of the Chennai metropolitan area is present at the mini bus service. Popularly known as "Maxi cab" small buses also operate regularly on many routes of the city. Tenant transport facilities include Meter Taxi, the Eastern Freeway tourist taxis and Autorickshaw.

The city's Chennai International Airport is used as an airport for both domestic and international aircrafts. It is directly connected with the flights of thirty national and international airlines with major centers in South Asia, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Europe and North America. This airport is India's second busiest freight terminus.
