LOVE
Love is the first characteristics of the fruit of the Holy Spirit. The English word love has very broad meaning, but the Greek language is very precise. There are three fundamental categories of love; Eros; Phileo and Agape. The love which the Holy Spirit manifests in believers is agape. This love is not a feeling, but a choice. It is the choice to be kind, to sacrifice and to consider other's needs greater than one's own.
"Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves." - Philippians 2:3 NIV.
Agape has a sense of hardness and difficulty in its expression.
"Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends." - John 15:13 NIV.
"This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters." - 1John 3:16 NIV.
"But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked." - Luke 6:35 NIV.
It is because of this kind of love that God carried out His plan to save the world.
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." - John 3:16 NIV.
God desires to show His perfect, selfless love to a world that is routinely confused about what true love is. God is only asking you to believe in Him and He will do the rest.
"But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." - Romans 5:8 NIV.
God's children are the conduits of His love, as they are empowered by the Holy Spirit.
