1 Cor 2: 10 But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God

Accounts of the Virgin Birth

Scripture contains 2 accounts of the Virgin birth and each contributes significantly to our understanding of the concept and event.

Mathews account

Matthew 1:16-25 And Jacob begot Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus who is called Christ.
17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations, from David until the captivity in Babylon are fourteen generations, and from the captivity in Babylon until the Christ are fourteen generations.
18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. 19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly. 20 But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”
22 So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: 23 “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.”
24 Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife, 25 and did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son.[d] And he called His name Jesus.

Emphasis of the Matthew's account

  • Focuses on Joseph.
  • The work of the Holy Spirit
  • The non-involvement of Joseph
Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.
Note: Of whom is genitive - feminine - singular in grammatical form indicating that no man was involved.

Galatians 4:4 4 But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born[a] of a woman, born under the law

  • The specific fulfilling of Old Testament prophecy.
    Matthew 1:23 quotes Isaiah 7:14.

Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.[b]

  • Shows Jesus' legal right to reign as the Davidic king (house and linage of David)

verse 17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations, from David until the captivity in Babylon are fourteen generations, and from the captivity in Babylon until the Christ are fourteen generations.

verse 20 Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife,

  • ** Shows the divinity of Christin his title Immanuel - God with us*

Mathew 1:23(b) and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.”

Thank you for your kind words, it is really encouraging. Blessings!

Virgins become pregnant and mothers every day! There is nothing unique about that. Now Mary was pregnant and had a man child an remained a virgin until after she had Jesus. Now that is unique and amazing. A Virgin shall conceive and they shall call Him Emmanuel!

Lol, yes once they conceive they are not a Virgin anymore. Blessings Daddy William!

I really don’t mean it as a joke. There are some that mix this up. They believe Mary had intercourse to have Jesus. This is a Mormon belief and some others. Then there are those that make her a perpetual virgin, which also is not biblical.

Dear @hope777,

I am enjoying this series on Bible doctrine. I would like to share with you the first prophecy of the virgin birth.

And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel. Genesis 3:15

And I will put enmity [hostility] between you and the woman and between your seed and her seed. The same Hebrew word for “seed” is used in both cases "Zerah" can be defined as seed, offspring or semen.

Although the same Hebrew word is used for Satan’s seed as for Eve’s seed, it is important to understand that since Eve could not produce semen, the use of the word for “seed” in Eve’s case is an allusion of the “virgin” birth of Messiah.

Although Eve’s offspring would be birthed, He would be miraculously birthed. The enmity would not only be between Satan and the “woman” but between Satan’s seed and her seed.

And I will put enmity between you and the woman and between your seed and her seed; he (the coming Messiah [woman’s seed – “singular”]) will crush your (Satan’s) head.

This is the first promise given after the Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden. Theologians call it the protoevangelium–or first gospel because these words spoken by God contain the first promise of redemption in the Bible.

Blessings in Yeshua, Steven Sherman @lastdays
