Why Do You Not Feel Anything in Front of The Cross?

Churches are always full of crosses.

성당에는 아예 예수님이 십자가에서 피를 흘리신 모형을 곳곳에 설치해놓고 있죠.

Catholic churches even have statuettes of Jesus hanging on the cross, bleeding.

이렇게 십자가를 교회에 설치해놓았지 모르는 크리스천은 아무도 없습니다.

And no Christian questions why those are placed in church.

예수님께서 우리의 죄를 대신하여 십자가에서 보혈을 흘려주셨으므로, 우리의 죄가 용서받아 하나님과 화목하게 되고 천국에 들어가는 자격을 얻게 되었기 때문이에요.

Jesus spilt his blood on the cross and reconciled us and God by forgiving our sins; and we received the right to enter heaven.

그렇다면 이 보다 더 기쁜 소식이 세상에 또 어디 있을까요?

What other news is there that’s better than this?

그래서 ‘기쁜 소식’이라는 뜻의 헬라어 ‘유앙겔리온’이 복음이라고 번역된 이유입니다.

That is why it is called the gospel (“euangelion” in Greek) which means “the good news.”

그래서 당신은 십자가를 바라볼 때마다, 나를 대신해서 십자가의 끔찍한 고통을 마다하지 않으신 예수님의 절절한 사랑에 마음이 뭉클해지며 가슴이 저려옵니까?

So do you feel moved and emotional whenever you see the cross, thinking about God’s love for you that ended up on the cross?

솔직히 말해서 그런 크리스천은 거의 없습니다. 과거에 어쩌다가 그런 적이 있었던 적이 있는지는 모르지만, 그게 어떻게 날마다 그런 감정이 들겠어요?

Honestly speaking, no Christians really show this kind of love. Maybe some had experience once before, or even a few times; but is it possible to feel that way daily?

뜨겁게 사랑해서 결혼에 골인한 부부도 몇 년 살다보면 사랑의 감정이 흐지부지되어서 밋밋해지는 판에, 예수님의 처형장에 가본적도 없는 우리가, 그런 감정을 강요한다는 게 억지스럽다는 생각도 들 겁니다.

You might think it doesn’t make sense to “force” one to love God unconditionally, when no one today witnessed his death; I mean… even couples fall out of love and file divorce.

그래서 우리는 머리에 지식으로 넣어두고는 교회마당을 밟고 있는 중이죠. 저도 오랫동안 그랬습니다.

So many of us attend church with faith as an ideology. I was one of them.

그리나 그게 그리 문제라고 생각하지 않고 신앙생활을 해왔어요.

But I didn’t see anything wrong with that and continued on.

목회자들 비롯해서 주변의 교우들도 저와 별 다르지 않았기에 말이죠.

I mean, everyone around me-including other pastors-was the same.

그러나 성경을 보세요. 사도들을 비롯해서 수많은 제자들은 예수님께서 십자가에 흘리신 보혈을 평생 가슴에 새기고, 날마다 감사하면서 자신의 인생과 생명을 바치지 않았습니까?

But look at what the Bible says; didn’t people thank God and offer their lives, reminding what the cross means everyday?

왜 우리는 십자가가 교회의 장식품에 불과한데, 그들은 자신들의 삶과 생명을 바꿀 정도로 그토록 절절했었을까요?

Cross is pretty much part of church decor; why were people so emotional, emotional enough to offer their lives?

그러나 교회에서는 아무도 이 차이를 알려주지 않았습니다. 그래서 오늘은 그 얘기를 좀 하고 싶어요.

But church doesn’t bother to explain. So I’d like to talk about that.

우리나라는 인권과 자유가 보장되어 있습니다.

Our nation (South Korea) guarantees human rights and liberty.

그래서 자유 민주주의 공화국, 혹은 줄여서 자유대한민국이라고 부르기도 하지요.

So it’s called ROK, Republic of Korea.

그래서 여러분은 이 나라에서 자유를 보장받고 누리고 살고 있음에 감사하며 살고 있습니까?

Are you thankful for rights and freedom given to you?

그러나 대부분의 사람들은 “아니, 무슨 뚱딴지같은 소리인가? 당연한 얘기를 가지고 말이야.”라고 생각할 겁니다.

Most would think, “What are you talking about? Everyone knows that.”

그도 그럴 것이, 태어나면서 그렇게 살아왔기 때문이에요. 자유에 대한 감사는 자유를 빼앗겨본 사람만이 알 수 있죠.

Yes, it’s true. We were born with the freedom and rights; people who REALLY appreciate freedom are the ones who’ve lost it before.

여러분이 북한의 정치범수용소에서 갇혔다고 쳐봅시다. 매일처럼 강제노동을 하면서 배를 곯다가, 병들어 죽거나 맞아죽어야 비로소 그 곳을 떠날 수 있습니다.

Let’s talk about political prisoners in North Korea; they are forced to work in sweatshop-like condition, starved, and and diseased.

그런 사람들은 자유가 관념적인 이해나 감상적인 느낌이 아니라, 매일처럼 피부로 느껴지는 현실이겠죠.

These people don’t “understand” freedom as an idea; they feel it (or the lack of) everyday.

이처럼 여러분이 예수님께서 흘리신 십자가의 보혈이 절절하지 않은 이유도 이와 같습니다. 십자가의 보혈이 내 삶과 영혼에 얼마나 지대한 영향을 미치고 있는지 모르고 있기 때문이에요.

The same applies to you thinking about Jesus’ blood on the cross; you don’t know how much his blood affects your life.

그동안 여러분이 믿고 있는 것은 지식으로 머리에 쌓아둔 관념적인 이해에 불과할 뿐입니다. 말하자면 믿고 있다고 착각하는 것이에요.

What you considered as faith is mere a concept of faith, mere knowledge, which you think you believe.

그래서 십자가를 보아도 아무런 감동이 일어나지 않고 느낌이 없던 겁니다. 그러나 제 주장을 인정하는 이들이 몇 명이나 될까요?

That’s why you don’t really feel anything when you look at the cross. But who’d really agree and accept what i say is true.

그가 찔림은 우리의 허물 때문이요 그가 상함은 우리의 죄악 때문이라 그가 징계를 받으므로 우리는 평화를 누리고 그가 채찍에 맞으므로 우리는 나음을 받았도다(사53:5)

But he was pierced for our transgressions,

he was crushed for our iniquities;

the punishment that brought us peace was on him,

and by his wounds we are healed.  (Isaiah 53:5)

위의 이사야의 말씀을 모르는 크리스천들은 거의 없겠죠.

I’m sure most Christians are aware of this passage.

여기에서 말하는 그가 바로 예수님이시며, 예수님께서 우리의 죄를 대신하여 십자가의 형벌을 받으시므로 우리의 질병이 치유되었고 삶이 회복되었으며, 평안과 기쁨과 형통한 삶을 되찾고 영원한 천국에서 살게 되었기 때문입니다.

“He” mentioned is Jesus; Jesus paid for our sins on the cross, and therefore, our lives were restored with joy and peace. And we are able to earn the right to enter heaven.

그래서 여러분에게 묻겠습니다. 여러분과 여러분의 가족의 정신질환과 고질병이 치유되었으며, 여러 가지 지난한 삶의 문제가 해결되었고, 미움과 불화로 인해 서로 원수가 된 배우자와 가족들이 회복되어 행복하게 살고 있나요?

Let me ask you this:

Are you and your family healed? Were your problems resolved? Are you and your family reconciled, living happily ever after?

또한 사업과 투자의 실패, 직장에서의 해고로 극심한 재정부족에서 벗어나서 넉넉하게 살고 계십니까?

Are you free from poverty caused by failure of business and unemployment?

아니라면 여러분은 여전히 죄의 덫에 걸려서 불행에 빠져서 고통스럽게 살고 있는 중입니다.

If not, you’re probably in misery, still, in the traps of sin.

여러분의 영혼이 건조하고 냉랭하며 삶이 고단하고 팍팍한 이유는 하나님이 돌보시지 않기 때문입니다.

The only reason you’re in this state is because God is not taking care of you.

하나님이 돌보시지 않기 때문에 하나님을 모르는 세상 사람과 진배없이 사는 게 재미없고 지긋지긋하죠.

And because God is not looking after you, yourlife is empty and dreadful, not any different from non-believers.

그러나 영접기도를 하고 주일성수를 하며 각종 희생적인 신앙행위를 하고 있기 때문에, 하나님과 단절되어 있다는 것에 무지하고 착각하고 있을 뿐입니다.

But you’d think you’re with God because you follow everything church tells you so.

오직 너희 죄악이 너희와 너희 하나님 사이를 갈라놓았고 너희 죄가 그의 얼굴을 가리어서 너희에게서 듣지 않으시게 함이니라(사59:2)

But your iniquities have separated

you from your God;

your sins have hidden his face from you,

so that he will not hear. (Isaiah 59:2)

중풍병자에게 네 죄 사함을 받았느니라 하는 말과 일어나 네 상을 가지고 걸어가라 하는 말 중에서 어느 것이 쉽겠느냐(막2:9)

Which is easier: to say to this paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, take your mat and walk’? (Mark 2: 9)

위의 구절은 죄 때문에 우리가 하나님과 단절되어 있다고 말하고 있으며, 밑의 구절은 성인병인 뇌졸중이 바로 죄 때문에 그렇다고 말씀하고 계십니다.

The passage above says we’re cut off from God, and the bottom says the paralysis is caused by sins.

그러나 우리네 교인들은 자신들이 예수님의 보혈의 공로로 죄가 용서함을 받았다고 믿고 있지만, 성인병인 중풍에 걸린 것이 이와 상관없다고 생각하죠.

However, Christians today believe these illnesses are not relevant to their salvation.

또한 또 다른 성인병인 암과 심장병, 고혈압, 당뇨병, 치매 등은 자신의 죄와 상관없이, 나이가 들어 늙으면 생기는 병으로 알고 있어요.

They believe these illnesses naturally occur as they age.

그렇다면 예수님의 말씀이 거짓말이라는 이야기일까요?

Then, is Jesus’ word all a great lie?

십자가의 보혈이 절절하게 느껴지는 사람은, 성령이 안에 들어와서 보혈의 능력을 체험하게 해주는 사람입니다.

People who are touched by Jesus’ blood on the cross are the ones Holy Spirit is within, having them experience mercy of God.

이런 사람은 성령이 내주하는 기도의 훈련을 통해, 기적처럼 정신질환과 고질병이 낫고 가정이 회복되고 가난에서 벗어나며, 각종 지난한 삶의 문제에서 해결된 사람입니다.

These people get their life’s dilemma resolved, family restored, health restored, and poverty gone, all through the prayer training.

성령이 내주하시면 십자가의 보혈의 의미를 가슴에 새겨지게 해주세요.

When Holy Spirit comes, he gives you true understanding of the meaning of blood of Jesus.

그런 사람은 기적과 이적으로 귀신을 쫓아내며 귀신들이 일으킨 각종 정신질환과 고질병을 치유하며 영혼을 구원하는 사역을 하는 도구로 사용되는 겁니다.

These people are used a s God’s tools and servants, casting out demons, healing illnesses, and rescuing souls.

그러니 어떻게 십자가에서 흘리신 보혈이, 가슴에 절절하게 감사하게 느껴지지 않겠습니까?

How can one not be moved at the sight of a cross?

그러므로 여러분이 십자가를 바라볼 때 아무런 감흥이 일어나지 않는다면, 하나님과 아무런 상관이 없는 사람이라는 것을 증명하는 겁니다.

So if you don’t feel much when you see a cross, that probably means you have nothing to do with God.

그러니 여러분이 어떻게 천국에 들어갈 것입니까?
