Black Panther

Well, it has to be said: Black Panther, if it was a good movie. It has some pretty big mistakes, but nevertheless it becomes a very good and entertaining superhero movie. Today, the world is full of superhero movies, and we're already getting to the point where they all look alike, and they all follow the same form. And what emphasizes the Black Panther from the rest is that he definitely breaks with this newly formed stereotype, and ends up being quite different from the others.

Ryan Coogler, you must definitely take credit for the fact that you created something impressive, and that this something is so charged with respect for black culture, and especially African-American culture. Wakanda is full of technology everywhere, and all these devices, although they could do incredible things, like shields, easily stop a tank or the like; they are still based on things we would find in an African country; the robes, the spears, the jewellery, etc. Coogler did a very creative job of combining these two styles, because the results they gave were really great.

Another thing, yes, T'Challa character is great, and Boseman gives another great performance. But, for me, what definitely gets the film is "The Black Panther Team". They could easily leave half of the film to the "supporting characters" and it would have been an equal success. T'Challa's mother, Shuri, Nakia and... Okoye (Totally, my second favorite character in the movie... Danai Gurira is simply amazing.) Actually, it's very impressive like the movie, it doesn't necessarily need to have its protagonist in order for the movie to still be interesting.

And this film, really his strongest point, is his villains. Marvel didn't bring one... but two of the best villains in his entire universe in this film. Andi Serkis like Ulyses Klaw is great.... He is intense, loves to be evil, looks dangerously aggressive, and really imposes you; and he loved it when he was on screen. And Erik Killmonger.... I'll sum it up by saying that he was my favorite character. Really, he ends up being one of the best villains, relying on his reasons. His reasons are very interesting, his motive is really good and very meaningful; really when he presented it, when they started to develop it (A little late but good, I must talk about it later on) it didn't cost me anything to say "Hey, he's right" and take his side. Of course, you must make it very cruel, evil and intense... But the fact that he knows the power that Wakanda possesses is very, very interesting. Erik Killmonger, who really knows racism, was raised in the USA, and that makes him know first-hand the treatment that the black race has received... And all this makes the reason on which his actions are based completely valid. This makes the main conflict and its social commentary look really good. Two sides of the same coin facing off for the same thing: Does Wakanda have to be public to share her resources or would that just contaminate her too?

Now, a rather remarkable problem with the film is that.... Killmonger, as I said, is a great villain... who is very late for the film. It takes a long time to appear and I feel that at one point the film stops doing what it was trying to do in the first half, which is when Killmonger is suddenly introduced, so that it becomes another film. Not a bad introduction, no, it's a really good one. But the film suddenly starts to go very fast when they try to explain to us who he is, his goals, his confrontations. And this hasty pace, if you feel it affects your actions, or more than that, its impact when we see it on a large scale. Also, a very notorious problem is special effects (Wow, a Marvel movie with bad effects, What?) There are certain times when these effects were seen as effects of old superhero movies like X-Men or Spiderman 3. For example, rhinos really looked very bad. And the final battle of Black Panther vs Killmonger, looks like a video game (which was already happening, but on a smaller scale). But, the effects itself was not what affected my opinion. If not rather in scenes where it was very dark or there were very fast cuts that made the action difficult to understand, and all this combined with sometimes ugly special effects, it was what affected my experience with the film.

And well, going in to see the film I had the expectation of the wonder that the media was saying, but I came out a little lower than I thought it would be. Yes, the film is very entertaining, Wakanda looks great, the respect and honor to the black culture are great, combined with the social message it gives. 98% of his characters in the film are great and above all, his villain is one of the best things Marvel has ever done, but as I said he has some pretty remarkable mistakes that can reduce the experience of watching the film. But, it doesn't mean it's not still an entertaining, interesting and very cool movie.
