"Frankenweenie" by Tim Burton - review

in #cinema6 years ago (edited)

It is very difficult to keep an objective position when it comes to "Frankenweenie" in combination with Tim Burton's madness and the unique fact that I was watching the IMAX movie in one of the 42-channel cinemas, in his premier week before years. I was thinking that I must not miss that chance, but I wonder then if I made a mistake by ignoring Paul Thomas Anderson and "The Master" at the expense of my old love "Burton?" ...

Anyone who is even aware of the work of this freak knows that "Frankenweenie" is a close-to-heart project that has been (shortly) years now a short film. The modest, self-confident Victor clings to the thought that an experiment in science at school will be able to return the life of his beloved puppy Sparky. The experience (as Frankenstein's surname suggests) is successful, but not only the friendly Sparky gets a new heartbeat - the envious children of the class, like a chain reaction, are struggling to revive whoever they can. Above the little town and the festive, fair glimpse of the hazards of a ... chaotic riot involving "walking dead" things and reckless teenagers.

There is no need for more detail on the plot. There are compassionate, understanding parents; the teacher with the wise counsel; blond and black-haired girls, supposedly "rivals" for Victor's attention (he is only interested in science and his favorite dog); the extortionist who teaches Victor's achievement; the queer mayor, who is far less "evil" than he is supposed to be; the burning mill - which is a must-have attribute in every gothic tale ... The movie has everything. And it's done well. Over-crafted in craftsmanship, not wanting to get into the details of how the lenses of the projector were not precisely focused, and half of the frames were blurred, with a blue and yellow trim - let's not forget that the movie is a black and white stop -motion 3D animation ...

But despite the great expectation and the "excitement" with super-looking visions, in the salon I realized I was excited about all the other facts and things around but not from the movie itself. Not that he did not meet my expectations - on the contrary. Not that I have objections and specific grievances - not at all. And while I was wondering what did not happen to me, I realized that 20 people left the room after the end of the movie! Cinema in the center of New York, on a Tuesday afternoon after the premiere o"Frankenweenie" ?!

Actually, this is the "clue" to my dissatisfaction - this film is selfishly self-directed, Burton has done it for herself and for a number of her fans, and as always - without being interested in studio / distributors and / or the audience (not recommended for "unprepared" children's audience!). I liked it because I'm a crazy admirer, but as she sings in an old song, "it's all sort of like."

You either love Burton movies or you don't - I like it a lot and it's absolutely adorable and sweet, even if it is crazy.
