Violin is a very difficult instrument especially in the beginning so if he needs some fast successes guitar is maybe better. But at that age nothing is impossible, and going from one string instrument to another is easier than if he played the flute or piano, so maybe if he likes he could switch? In the end he will be the best to decide. Music is about joy and interest and finding your own way.
Ooooh, like @katharsisdrill said, the violin is a really tricky instrument to start with. Guitar or piano is always a good starting instrument, learning harmony is a critical skill that is missing in many people who learn single line instruments. Best of luck! It is something that takes a bit of dedication and practice to start to see results!
