Martial arts novel is a unique genre of Chinese literature. It is believed that “The Man with the Curly Beard” written in the late Tang dynasty was the forerunner of martial arts novels. The story background of Martial arts novel is usually ancient China and the adventure of Chinese hero.

Martial arts novels were traditionally regarded as a form of pulp fiction by the Chinese community. They were generally not treated as a subject for academic discussion. But Jin Yong created a sensation. He was inspired by the foreign literature and pursued innovation and a revolutionary approach to plot structure, characterization and the use of language. He focused on the personalities and psychological reflection of characters. Merging cinematic narrative techniques into his novels, he made his stories more tense and compelling. Also with an exceptional knowledge of Chinese history and culture in his novels, Jin Yong enhanced the literary value of martial arts novels.

Jin Yong had a very high standard of his works. He started writing “The Book and the Sword” in 1955. In 1967, he found newspaper Shin Min Daily News and published “The smiling, Proud Wanderer”. In 1972, he declared “The Deer and the Cauldron” as his last novel. He then spent 10 years to review and adapt his earlier novels, and published “The Jin Yong Novel Collection”. Jin Yong once again decided to polish and perfect “The Jin Yong Novel Collection” from 2000 to 2006. The final versions of the novels were the “The Newly Revised Jin Yong Novel Collection”.

Comics of Jin Yong’s novels

I read my first Jin Yong’s novel, “The Deer and the Cauldron” when I was 10. In 20 years, I had read through The Jin Yong Novel Collection for more than 5 times. Jin Yong’s novels influence me a lot, including increasing my interest of Chinese history, literature and culture. I was able to tell all the plots of Jin Yong’s novels. It also influence my writing.

Jin Yong is the great giant of Chinese literature. If you have the chance, you can’t miss the exhibition.

Again, a video for you.
