Chinese poem - “Hiking" By DU Mu (Includes original song and video) | 《山行》- 杜牧 (內有原創樂曲及影片)

DU Mu wrote this poem to reflect his love of the maple forest when he went hiking on one autumn day. Often poems about spring and autumn are quite sad, but the different elements described in this poem paints a very energetic and passionate picture in the autumn maple forest.

作者在深秋時節踏上深山小路，寫下此詩，表達了對楓林的無限熱愛。自古以來詩人總愛傷春悲秋，但這首詩中的寒山、石徑、白雲、人家、楓林與霜葉結合起來，呈現的卻是深秋時分山林中充滿生氣、絢麗奪目的楓林與作者對其之喜愛，讓人眼前一亮。

The meaning of the poem 作品大意

遠上寒山石徑斜（xiá），白雲深處有人家。
Yuǎn shàng hánshān shí jìng xiá, Báiyún shēn chù yǒu rénjiā

停車坐愛楓林晚，霜葉紅於二月花。
Tíngchē zuò ài fēng lín wǎn, Shuāng yè hóng yú èr yuè huā

During autumn I ascend up the steep cobblestone path in the chilly mountain
深秋時節登上遠處山中傾斜的石子路，

A few houses can be seen amongst the clouds
雲霧繚繞的深處有幾戶人家。

I love the sight of the maple leaves at dusk and stop my sedan chair
因為喜愛傍晚時分的楓葉林而停下轎子，

The autumn maple leaves are more beautiful and crimson than the February flowers.
經過寒霜洗禮的楓葉比二月的花朵還要紅。

Although the focus of this poem is in the last two lines, this poem is quite simple and readers can easily feel the poet’s love of the maple forest. The first line describes the mountain area and the steep cobblestone path, both which gives a cold and chilly feeling. Next there are a few houses, and we find life deep inside the mountain. The poem moves from cold to slight warmth. It graduals to warmth in the third line when the poets sees the maple trees. Finally in the fourth line, he uses the colour red to describe his passion of love for the maple forest. The use of different objects and scenery to reflect the change in temperature from cold to hot in this poem is a very clever style of writing. It takes readers through a gradual shift and a journey through the poem.

At Qingfengxia in Changsha City in China, there is a Wanfeng Pavilion. This is named after the third line in the poem “Hiking, by DU Mu”. When the pavilion was rebuilt in 1952, Mao Zedong even wrote an inscription for it. Today, Wanfeng Pavilion is one of the four famous pavilions in China, and thus reflects the status of this poem.

大家知道嗎？在長沙市嶽麓山清風峽有個「愛晚亭」，它的名字就是來自杜牧《山行》中的「停車坐愛楓林晚」一句。現時愛晚亭的匾額是毛澤東在1952年重建亭時題寫的；亭內還有詩詞《沁園春·長沙》的橫匾。愛晚亭是「中國四大名亭」之一，間接反映出《山行》一詩在中國文化歷史中的重要性。
