Cockfighting is a bloody sport where two cocks are held in a cockpit, sometimes in an open area, to fight. It has been practiced for centuries in different countries like the Philippines. Cockfighting is a form of entertainment and past time to some.
What makes cocks fight?
Cocks have aggressiveness towards the same males. That's why they are penned individually to avoid fighting with each other.
Things to consider in choosing fighting cocks:
The cock must have long wings for strong shuffling, small head, broad thick tail feathers, broad back and thick big beaks.
Game cocks are like athletes, they have their own special diets, the owners exercise them early in the morning and they even have vitamins.
Not all fights are held in a cockpit arena, others do it in a vacant lot or in the backyard with so many onlookers, it can be legal or illegal depending on the laws implemented by the local government.
Like boxers and wrestlers, cocks are weighed and the two fighters must have the same weight, has similar two metals sharp razor blades about 3 inches long tied to the cocks feet and use it to slash each other during the fight.
Persons handling the cocks needs expertise because it is very dangerous, there were cases of accidents happened that a cockfighter handler was killed.
Usually, the fight lasts for several minutes or 30 minutes or more. Certain rules are followed during the fight. The fight goes on until one is dead or can no longer fight.
Cock fighting is a form of gambling where spectators bet for their favorite cock or rooster, still, the owner has the biggest bet most of the time.
Cock Derby are big time events that are held for cockfighting and usually influential people are present since this is a big time event and big amount of bets.
There are campaigns to this cockfighting by some animal welfare organization who are against cockfighting, they claim that it's animal cruelty and it's an abuse to cocks.
In my country, the Philippines cockfighting is part of Filipino culture most especially during holidays and fiesta celebration. Almost in every town, there is a cockpit arena. If there is law that ban cockfighting, well maybe cockfighting aficionados will rally along the streets.

Yes, Still its a tradition in many parts of India as well, and they take pride in it. These cocks are trained, fed and looked after so well. You can also watch one of the most award winning flick: Aadukalam(2011), which was all about cock fighting, was worth watching.

It may look terrible to some people, but it's a good income for me.
In fact, I thought it was immoral for a long time, until I tried it myself. Although it's a bloodbath that looks quite ferocious, it's also a good way to make money. To be honest, I sometimes go to talpakanph to watch live broadcasts and place bets. This is the fastest way to earn money. And I really need the money.
