Coinbase - "from lake to well"

in #coinbase5 years ago

In Romanian there is an expression - "din lac in put" - translated word by word to "from lake to well". Its meaning is that you got out of a bad situation and jumped into another, just as bad or worse.

I've just read this morning there is a scandal surrounding the acquisition of the blockchain tracking startup Neutrino by Coinbase. It seems the founders of this firm sold in the past surveillance applications to government agencies and corporations. I'm not clear if they knew these applications will be used for dirty purposes, or they just made the apps and the customers used them as they saw fit (that's a lame excuse). Without knowing anything about these apps, just by knowing their types and their customers, I have at least a big question mark.

But there is more. Coinbase knew about the past of these founders and their involvement in these deals. And they decided to move on with the acquisition.

What was perplexing for me was their justification. They needed to push forward with the acquisition because their current tracking providers were selling client data to outside sources (source).

That's "great news" if you are a Coinbase client! Your data might have been sold already. Does that remind you of a certain monster company?

If there's any consolation (it isn't for me), we found out about this from Coinbase, as opposed to a third party.

The solution they found to mitigate the risk of more client data selling seems to come with its own risk leverage, and certainly not received well by the crypto community.

Sort:

They all sell data and nothing is for free. I don't think that crypto will ever remain private because the ones pulling the strings of the world have no interest in allowing that to happen and they're the ones saying yes or no to anything that we use. The important stuff I mean. I remember reading a few years ago a book about masons and Illuminati in which the author mentioned that in the near future we are going to have a world government and a world wide accepted currency and that IBM is in works for a giant server to practically "store us" on it.

I don't have any details about the topic and I don't want to spend my time figuring out this but crypto might have been a currency created by them, advertised as the currency of the people that it's going to disrupt banks and then transformed in the only currency that there is to be used and no one will be able to hide his/her holdings and make them private or "hide" any transactions. Who knows, probably I ma a bit too conspirator and Bitcoin might really be what was intended for as well as other cryptos but till date there are plenty of "proofs" that a handful of people are ruling the whole planet and they decide for us.

I think there are only a handful of coins that steered toward full anonymity (the only way to ensure privacy protection 100%). There are often marginalized and will probably have an even harder time in the future.

Theories of conspiracy or not, there are probably data stored and analyzed about each of us, and that's scary.
