Random thoughts about comedy...

in #comedy6 years ago

As some of you may have noticed, most of my content is tailored towards the side of humor. That is my intention but my results may vary greatly.
Im not saying the stuff i write is funny, nor do i consider myself a funny guy. In real life im far from it. Im just a regular guy traveling through life, with his ups and downs, enjoying the sites along the way until he gets to the same destination we all are headed for. If you had a cup of coffee with me you might even find me dull.
I dont wear funny shoes or funny glasses, my pants and shirt are ironed. I even have all my teeth and after dinner i use a toothpick with one hand covering my mouth. Because manners.

So what is it that makes me write in the way i try to do? I cant say for sure, but there is something very contradicting with what i perceive as being my motivation. As i said, we all have our ups and downs. Some more, some less, but it all balances out based on our expectations in life.
So what i have noticed is that a lot of times when im in a down period, maybe im sad, maybe im depressed, maybe shit isnt working out how i it should, i turn to humor, comedy. At least my version of it...

And thats where the odd thing is. When i think everything is going well, ill put on some Eddie Murphy, LCK, Chappelle, Carlin, Izzard, Jefferies etc.
But when shit is tough there is a weird need inside me to try and write something funny.

No matter how other people will perceive it, i have a need to make this attempt, a drive inside me exists not to make you laugh, but rather to see if i can make myself laugh, which gives me a sense of accomplishment if i manage to succeed.

I have made this. And i think its funny.

Its almost therapeutic in a way. When youre down and stuff isnt working out you test your ability to feel laughter and joy to see if it is still there inside you. (it is ofc, but you try and pull it out)

Can you punch a hole through that black cloud thats pushing down on you.

Now i know this is only my experience. Some people have differing motivations. Some are just simply funny. Some have the ability to fall and break their nose and they will laugh it off, see a friend get hurt and sincerely just laugh: "He was an asshole anyways."...See humor in things where you would not usually look for it.
Some people that try to be funny are just genuinely happy people. But i have so many times noticed that those considered amongst the funniest of them draw motivation from a different place.

A much darker place. Im not saying i suffer from depression (at least I hope not haha) so I cant claim to fully understand what it is, but so many well-known comedians suffer from depression or had experiences in life that haunt them. Negative experiences.
Those that have seen and experiences the other side of life that isnt all hugs and gummy bears seem to be more receptive to the bad stuff that happens to others. Most people need to be told by their community, or news, their peers….: “This is bad, picket here, get angry at this”.
But these guys see it, they don’t need to be told. And they have a unique talent to word it not only in a entertaining way, but compelling as well.
I think some use comedy to share their realistic view of the world simply in an entertaining way, as a way to vent their thoughts about life, so they can cope more easily with the feelings inside them and ofc make money doing so...? Could be. Or I could be talking out my rear end. :)

It has always seemed to me that the guy that would stand up on the stage, like George Carlin, and speak up about the same things George did, in a non funny way, that he would be yelled off the stage and be considered a disruptive, cynical, crazy old man...

But what did George do? He sprinkled humor over his message. Because he knew that people probably would not care to hear it otherwise..
And people listened and they listened good.
Consider i said for example:

Jeez. Ive seen so many people kiss whale asses here, interacting in a non-sincere, fake manner just to create relationships based on lies that will propel them up the ladder just a little bit further.

If I said that, everyone would run. Had i said that somewhere with a large crowd, i would be marginalized, placed in the "community nuthouse", labeled a disruptive influence. And that’s fine. It doesn’t make it right, imo, but the community is what decides your fate in the end on the platform.

But instead, consider i put up a photo like this....

I think @fishmon made this photo

See the message is almost the same, but its under the guise of humor. Does he really believe that? Is he just joking?
I think comedians understood that by being smart with their presentation (and im not saying it makes you a comedian just putting up memes, just a bare bones example) you soften the effect of the information in your message and you do not risk the same danger as that "crazy dude" above. .
You package your message differently. Because its not what you say, its how you say it.

Normal people might have their heads down, going about their life, picking up dry cleaning, taking their kids to school, picking what drapes they will buy, not really thinking about stuff in such a way ....
But those comedians, since they can tap into that dark place, they see the shit more clearly. Tie this in with this motivation i spoke about, of having a need to find a way for yourself to see that you are capable of creating laughter and punch through that dark cloud, and maybe there just might be some validity to all this crap ive written here. lol

Just a few thoughts. In the end i might just be talking out my rear. :D

Love this post. Also have you seen Hannah Nanette's stand up on Netflix? The writing is incredible and the way she moves through comedy and darkness is like none I've seen before. Some argue that it's not stand up and it's more of a Tedtalk but I say WHO CARES ITS BRILLIANT ! We don't have to put it in a box.

I dont have Netflix but i do keep in touch what they make there. You can always find a clip or two on youtube.
Everyone has their style so it never gets boring even though the topics might repeat.
