One is and is not a Windows user, at the same time, whatever you like it or not. I left that town log ago, but mail still is delivered to me. A dear friend of mine asked my help, after she get fed up updating her Windows 10, just to stump everytime with this announce:

Error 0x80248007: Microsoft can't install important security updates on your PC until you install the most current version of Windows 10.

If you carefully, you'll say "Hey, there's is your solution. Just update Windows 10 to the last version, and you're done." Yeah, right.

Really, whato to do? Facing something as specifical, as a Microsoft Operating System's technical foe, the best place to enquire is MS and MS users fora. There's nothing wrong with Google, Bing or even DuckDuckGo, except that you go directly for solutions, skipping all the garbage brought by search engines nowadays. So, my first phrase of the day is:

There is no one-search-fits-all internet search tool. First realize your search context, so you can retrieve answers with the higher relevance.

That's how we landed at answers.microsoft.com. Here, the more accurate answer. AS in the Three Bears tale, there are three answers in this thread. The first one, the most complete, but overwhelming. Pro. guru, illuminati or "I'd better pay someone to do it for me" oriented. It's got even a link to a 12 (T-W-E-L-V-E) things to do BEFORE upgrade Windows 10. The third answer, grim and shallow. As if everyone else was performing tasks like that day in, day out. But the second answer was direct, understandable, remarkably straight to the point. Here it comes my second phrase of the day:

Fora threads have to be read to the whole extent, or at least to the point they leave the original theme and begin to talk BS

Greg Carmack says there to install Fall Creator Version 1709, by means of Media Creation Tool. First install the MCT, then choose "Update Now". What's convenient about Media Creation Tool is that solves a range of problems and misconfigurations, even if they come by the hand of a buggy Windows Updater. It also allows to download and burn the required ISO Images you need for install, reinstall or even repair your OS.

Greg also suggest to have a look at this checklist, so to rest assured everything is OK with your Windows 10. ¿What if the upgrade process become mischevious? Here you can see how to cope with it. As always, YOU BETTER GET SURE YOU HAVE A COMPLETEDLY BACKED UP YOUR SYSTEM BEFORE UPGRADE.

PUBLIC SERVICE IS OVER. Now, to ...

THE FINE PRINT

The fine print says that THE LATEST UPGRADE DOESN'T APPLY TO EVERY COMPUTER that runs the Windows 10 version to be upgraded. Here it is the Windows 10 version 1709 Hardware Compatibility List. This doesn't means anyway your machine became obsolete, but that you are being pushed to purchase a newer computer. This is a hideous practice being used by many industries nowadays. Cars, printers, computers, Cameras, glasses... Yeap, Polycarbonate glasses lose transparency in a few months, forcing you to replace them, even if your optic formula still works for you.

Microsoft support policies are clear enough. They make you know they are not commited to support obsolete hardware. They prefer to frame the operativity of their OS in a range of devices sporting selected technologies. This way, they save and unbelievable amount of man hours support work. They rather push you to acquire a new computer, from which the also profit, by means of the OS license embedded on its retail price. So, instead of losing money supporting your old device, they even earn it when you purchase a new computer.

FACT: You can purchase a new computer with no Operating System, and claim the according cut in its retail price. But you'll hardly find a seller who tells you that.

Smartphones are knowingly subject to Programmed Obsolescence practices. That is a surprise to nobody. Programmed Obsolescence electronic parts addition to cars and vehicles arise an ethical question no one talks about by now

What will happen when programmed obsolescence electronics embedded in cars start causing road casualties?

Programmed Obsolescence is such a big fat ethical problem. The kind that goes beyond pushing consumers to spend more and more money to replace fully functional paraphernalia. A problem that could cause lifes.

Got it. Now tell me, What happend to your friend?

Well, we verified the hardware compatibily list, and no, her computer is not ellegible to support Windows 10 version 1709. That was when I pick my Linux Mint 18 LTS USB stick, for a live test run. My friend, as clever as she is, noticed that it is the same OS running in my 2011 Toshiba Satellite. Details apart, I burn here a DVD, which she is testing now. Meanwhile, not being able to fully update her Windows 10 still gets on her nerves.
