Quantity v Quality

This is an age old debate - which is better:

Quantity v Quality
Do you go for "quantity" on the one hand and be prolific, with the risk that some of your output might be substandard?

Or, do you opt for "quality" and reduce your output, releasing only more considered output that is subject to strict quality assurance?

When it comes to "content" in the realm of social media etc, I believe that today there is one clear winner out of these two strategies.

It is QUANTITY.

Why? I think there are two main reasons why quantity trumps quality today:

  1. There is so much noise. This means that it is getting increasingly difficult to attract attention. Getting attention is hugely valuable and the only route through the noise seems to be pumping out content so that you get noticed. Then noticed again. And so you start to become familiar. People want brands and names that they are familiar with to follow and to interact with. The risk with only pushing out content when it hits a certain quality threshold is that all that work that went into the quality content is likely to be unseen - and fall by the way-side. It is frustrating but this is the way of the world today - it is, what it is.
  2. Pumping out content on a frequent and consistent basis will, over time, inherently improve quality. Practice makes perfect, so they say, so daily engagement in the creation of content will surely improve the delivery of the content over time. It is a win-win: constantly improving levels of quality combined with a frequency of output means that there is an increase in the odds of "being seen".
I appreciate that the 'purists' will be keen to attribute a leaning towards quantity over quality as leading to the 'dumbing-down' of content. But the reality is that the gems are often hidden among the most ordinary of stones. It is only by freeing people to create - without being judged on quality - that the truly great stuff can come into being. Staring at the blank white paper or screen waiting for a eureka moment rarely leads anywhere.

So go on, be prolific - go, create!

Respectfully disagree here.

In my honest opinion, placing emphasis on quantity as opposed to quality not only hurts your retention (as people will become inherently bored with seeing your low quality stuff over and over again) but also ruins your perception of what works and what doesn't.

For ages people preached that quantity was the key to winning on Instagram. And it was short lived. Instagram made some modifications with their artificial intelligent algorithm and those that posted frequently were often marked as spam.

I understand your position 100%. I just think it's not sustainable long-term.

Thanks for your comment and I take your point. I think the reality for most (who genuinely want to create useful and entertaining content) is that they don't produce anywhere near enough content to get anywhere close to "spam" - I agree that there are some cases of this here on Steem as well as IG etc, but these are rare for the genuine cases and audience who I am speaking to = entrepreneurs, artists, those seeking to build businesses and communities.

Most entrepreneurs, artists etc are scared of imperfection so they stall and procrastinate. They don't ship. Instead, if we encouraged imperfection and 'shipping' of more content, then the real gifts might start to emerge...

I should have made the audience more clear in the post with hindsight so thank you for calling this out.

I se your point now, and it makes perfect sense. I agree 🙌🏼
