I feel very great when I participate in contests but most of my entry doesn't even get vote not to talk of where it will be seen to be among the winners.
I believe in consistency. :)
I could imagine if you join a certain contest over several weeks, you will become seen.
Of course it also depends on the type of contests you join.
You can also try to take one which is almost closing and doesn't have a lot of entries yet, less participants = higher chance to win
Or the other way around : try to be amongst the first ones to submit your entry, more people will see you.
Which types of contests do you join?
Those strategies are great when you are new participant in the contests, but I think the interaction is very important as well. That way you'll have some responses, advices and you'll be contributing to create a community. Of course, it's a matter of consistency -as you said above- in the participation, in the quality of your posts and interactions.

Most times I participate in the photo contest by @juliank
maybe you can also try some others. I compile the weekly list of traditional art contests (drawing, painting, crafts,...), not the photo contests. But maybe you can check out @artz, I know he has a list with more variety and also many photo contests.
