My Entry:

No stranger to stealth, Xeon stood in the shadows holding his breath.

Around the corner of the building, a security guard smoked a cigarette; its red glow had alerted him to retreat on the catwalk. He’d been sneaking around the complex. Most people called this trespassing. It’s true. And yet Xeon felt justified in his pursuit of the secret that hid here on these hollow grounds.

“Hey 161, do you read me over?”

“Yes Base. 161 here. Read you loud and clear, over,” said the security guard smoking his cigarette in the dark nearby.

“161, we might have an unauthorized visit at the complex. Keep your eyes out for someone wondering around, over.”

“Will do base, over,” said the security guard. He then continued, “happens every time you light a cigarette. Hey 161 can you do this. Hey 161 can you do that. They got to be watching me or something.”

Xeon clinched knowing that his presence had been reported. He had to find the evidence his employer wanted in order to get paid. Only where could it be?

161 began to walk down the corridor of which the construction remained a mystery. The government claimed the complex as an old military installation. The media always tried to spin stories of alien technology being hidden there, like at Area 51.

161 shined his flashlight up toward a catwalk around the corner of the building.

Xeon could see the light and he got ready to make his move.

161, the security guard, stopped with his flashlight filling the darkness looking into the void.

Xeon launched himself forward into the air like a pouncing cat. He hit 161 in the chest pushing him backward violently.

“I’m just an hourly security guard,” 161 gasped as the wind got knocked out of him. His arms flinging into the air. He took another couple of steps back before falling into pitch black. A loud thud ending the noise.

Once again alone in silence. Once again alone in the darkness. Xeon felt his treasure must be near. The poor security guard might have found what he sought down there in some ancient rot. The flashlight giving a glow to a wall about 15 feet lower than the ground where Xeon stood.

Moving slowly, he began to make out boards spanning a gap. Between these wood planks the security guard must have fell. Below him the flashlight a grim reminder.

Xeon crouched down, and with professional agility jumped on top of some large metal machine in the room about six feet below. From atop this ancient alien artifact he could see 161’s death mask. As he squatted there he looked up into the night sky. The blue dot of Earth stood out among the stars.

Once a place they all called home, the irony of destroying the environment on Earth while spending billions of Bitcoin to restore it on Mars. And with time to look around, the discoveries that have been made, and now Xeon sat on top of ancient Martian technology. Real proof that another civilization existed here before people from Earth arrived. His employer would be happy.
