What's In Season in January?

in #cooking5 years ago

One of the best ways to ensure that your homemade meals are tasty and nutritious is to use fresh, seasonal ingredients. That’s easy to say and do in spring, with fresh peas and asparagus lining the shelves of the market, or in summer with bountiful tomatoes, strawberries, and herbs abounding, and in fall with root vegetables, apples, and squashes dominating the harvest. But in the dead of winter, it’s hard to conjure images of bright and leafy produce when the scene outside the window is snow, sleet, and not a speck of green.

Citrus, Oranges, Pomegranates, Grapefruit, Seeds, Fruit

Fortunately, that’s not the case everywhere. January is the perfect month for citrus. Oranges, grapefruits, tangerines, and lemons are all ripe for the picking in many places this time of year. A bite of fresh citrus is a great way to perk up anyone wallowing in the winter blues.

Also in season in January: spinach, broccoli, brussel sprouts, kiwis, beets, cabbage, kale, turnips, leeks, sweet potato and potato.

Market, Vegetables, Food, Grow, Final Sale, Stall

That said, frozen vegetables are one of the great culinary wonders of the modern world. Flash freezing produce ensures that a lot of their nutritional content survives long storage and shipping. Frozen fruits and veggies are a great way to enjoy the tastes of the warmer seasons all year long.
